Which are the finst places between Orccha and Mandu

Hi,

We want to spend some time the Western part of Madhya Pradesh during our next visit to India.
It is a part of a three months trip in december-march.

Our plan is to arrive in Orccha from Amarkantak and then

Orccha - 3 days
Chanderi - 3 days
Hoshangabad - 3 days
Khandwa/Omkareshwar/Maheshwar - 2 days
Mandu - 4 days

From there we go to Ujjain and Rajashtan

This is exclusive some days for travelling, as you see we like to travel in a quiet way.

How realistic is this idea? Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Hi Vonkla

I think your plan sounds good, I like that part of India a lot.

Just a couple of points - even though I have recommended Hoshangabad on Indiamike, I don't know if it really warrants 3 days, I'd suggest a day less there and a day more in Maheshwar.

And to be honest I'd skip Omkareshwar, I found it dirty, crowded and hassly and I've seen a recent photo with a huge dam right next to it. By contrast Maheshwar is a gem.

Are you planning on staying in Khandwa or just using it as a stopping off place from the train?
I like Khandwa, have stayed there a couple of times, and can recommend a 'characterful' hotel if you're interested.

How will you be travelling? Train and bus? or by car?

One of the reasons to stay at Hoshangabad is to use it as a base to visit Bhimbetka. Or maybe we go to Pachmarhi.

We stay there one or two nights and arrange a car to bring us to Maheshwar.

Of course we are interested in this.

At this moment our idea is to visit Omkareshwar on our way to Maheshwar. There we stay at least a night before we go to Mandu.

If possible by train. Otherwise we prefer a car over a bus.

The other thread where I talked about Hoshangabad is here:
Bhopal-Bhimbetka;Jalgaon-Ajanta;Aurangabad-Hampi

Now, Khandwa. The hotel where I've stayed is called Ashiana (though it was a long time ago and I'm getting confused now - maybe it was Ashirwad - No, Ashiana I think) It's an attractive white-painted building on a wide tree-lined street. I've stayed there 2 or possibly 3 times, always in the same room (on the front, with a little balcony), and what's odd is that I've never seen anyone else staying there. The hotel is run by Sai Baba (Puttaparthi)devotees, and we were once shown a room which is like a shrine to him.
It's easy to get to from the train station: when you come out of the station you walk slightly to the left and then take a side road to the right. There are a couple of shops selling hot milk on your right. The road then gets wider and you come to a crossroads, go straight over and the hotel is probably about the 4th or 5th building on the right, behind a big tree and with lots of coloured flags outside.

For info, to get to the bus stand in Khandwa from the train station you turn left out of the station and it's about 5 mins walk. The most direct route to Omkareshwar or Maheshwar by bus is via Barwah.

I think nobody has mentionned Sanchi On the way from Chanderi to Sanchi you should also visit Udayapur and Gyaraspur nd close to Sanchi the caves at Udaigiri.

On the way from Mandu to Ujjain you can also pay a short visit to Dhar.

On a previous trip we have already been to Bhopal and Sanchi. It is nice but we don't want to go there this time.

On the other hand, Dhar looks interesting,
thanks

Sanchi is also a place to pick up a train, as it's on the main north-south route

Hi Vonkla

It could be that one, and sorry for my vagueness on the name.

I'm not sure though because the address doesn't seem right - my hotel was not part of a complex and not on Station Road.

Sorry I can't really help, but good luck with your travels and I look forward to hearing about it.

i don't know how long you are planning on staying in ujjain, but i completely regret ever going there! possibly my least favourite place in india... yes, there are the temples and ghats, but they are not particularly interesting compared to other places and it is just not a very nice city.
