Orchha first or Khajuraho?

Hi!

I am thinking of spending a day at Orchha and 2 days at Khajuraho. I will be reaching the area through Jhansi station early morning on Day 1 and leaving the area through Jhansi station late night on Day 3.

How easy or hard is it to find taxis/ cabs (not shared please) to Khajuraho? & depending on the difficulties/ ease of finding one would you suggest we do Orchha first or Khajuraho?

If it is easier to get a taxi/ cab from Jhansi (without being bothered too much by touts), I'd prefer to do Khajuraho first? If it is easier to get one from Orchha, I'd prefer to do Orchha first?

I've had bad experiences with drivers and touts & guides in the North of India before and would try to minimise any such experiences again.

are you Indian ??

I think you should go to Orcha first (15 mins from Jhansi). Then next day you should go to Khajuraho (though it will take a long time by car).

In another thread recently it was mentioned that many of the sights in Orchha are being renovated in that charming Indian manner which involves massive scaffolding and considerable mess. That being the case you might want to consider a brief stop in Orchha to check out the situation, with the option to head on to Khajuraho later the same day. I'd recommend another stop at Panwa Falls en route, which is a nice break to a day long trip. You should be able to arrange a jeep to Khajuraho from either Jhansi or Orchha, and as for the touts - the best way to avoid them is to look for where the drivers congregate. It is also worth trying to contact prospective hotels in advance so as to have a definite end-point set for your journey.

Beware Jhansi drivers!

This story happened in January this year. I arrived by train at Jhansi and wanted to take a rickshaw to Orcha. At the rickshaw stand a driver told me the rate (180 I think) and dragged me to a big sign where all the fixed rates were posted. I had read about the fixed rates, but seemed to remember 150 and concluded that things must have gotten more expensive.
For my way back I made my hotel arrange for a rickshaw and wanted to verify the rate: 150 of course.
This is peanuts of course and made me smile, but when I read your post I thought I'd tell you....

In Orcha it can be difficult to find a rickshaw, not to mention a taxi. Either arrange it from Jhansi or through your hotel.

Jhansi to Khajuraho

Can anyone tell me the going rate for a taxi to Khajuraho from Jhansi station? And, how hard is it to find a taxi (not shared) outside Jhansi station to Khajuraho at 6 in the morning? And lastly, how bad are the roads? I had an operation recently and won't be able to last four hours on a road where the macadam has come off. Thanks in advance.

Go to Orchha first and there you can hire a taxi through a tourist agancy. But the roads are bad and it will be exhausting to do Orchha and Khajuraho in 3 days. Good luck!

I went to Khajuraho first and from there to Orcha. We stayed in a modest guest house in Orcha and the caretaker arranged an auto to Jhansi. Similarly it was easier arranging a cab from Khajuraho to Orcha through the hotel staff in Khajuraho.
