madhya pradesh
My next trip to India will only be short (one month December/January) and I decided I'd like to go somewhere I haven't gone before. So the plan is to head from Varanasi to Mumbai through Madhya Pradesh. I'm thinking Khajuraho, Orchha, Gwalior, Sanchi, Mandu and Omkareshwar. Anyone out there been to any of these places? Any I should give a miss or other places I must see? Also thinking of visiting Ajanta or Ellora caves on my way down to Mumbai - if I could just see one set or the other which do you all recommend? Thanks all!

near orchha you can visit a small place called chanderi..which is very nice and pleasant
gwalior is quite noisy but the fort is worth a visit.. but a day should be enough there.. near tala you could visit the bhandavgar national tigerpark.. i ve been there in march and i even did see some tigers... crazy maneaters.. ![]() khajuraho is something like a must... i was lucky to see the dance festival there.. but this time there were nearly no western tourists or travellers compared to other years before.. being before in south east asia I met so many travellers who were afraid to travell to india this year... but I guess and hope this will change again... all the business man,the restaurtant owners and many others more were quite desperate this year.. but take your time in Madhya Pradesh..you could easily spent years travelling there.. but for me I have to say that india is one of the safest country to travell in.. see you in india |

I really liked Mandu and wished that I had stayed there rather than visiting from Indore. Sanch is pretty cool too - I visted the stupa in the early morning when the sun was just coming up, There was a bit of mist about and it was beautiful.
Hard to pick between Ellora and Ajanta unless you're a real expert. If your time is short it might be easier to stay in Aurangabhad and just visit Ajanta. Stayoing over at Ellora is nice though. I really liked MP. Quite different as it's not on the usual tourist circuit which actually means a lot less hassle. It all seemed abit more authentic somehow. |

Looks like you have chosen some of the quieter places in India to spend your time on this trip. Khajuraho is a really important site if you are interested in history, art, architecture and religion. Being surrounded by jungles it was somehow missed by the idol destroyers who smashed up many other sites in India. You could easily spend a few days here. Orchha is also a small place with a village atmosphere, lots of temples and palaces and a clean river flowing past if you fancy a swim. Sanchi. See my post on the previous thread. Mandu. We spent about a week here. Hired bicycles and rode around the plateau visiting all the points of interest. A peaceful place with great views. Gwalior and Omkareshwar. Pass on these. Ellora or Ajanta? A very difficult choice but if pushed I would go for Ellora mainly because of the magnificent Kailasanatha Temple, which has been cut from the solid rock. I would also suggest a visit to Pachmarhi- one of the smallest of the Indian hill stations. A great place to spend a few days walking, cycling, relaxing, whatever. Good travelling |

Thanks Alan.... sounds good. Just out of interest....why pass on Omkareshwar? This guy that used to post on Thorn Tree raved about it and said it was his favourite place in India.... so I've always been intrigued.

Slight confusion. I didn't mean that you should pass on these places. Just that we haven't been to either so couldn't offer advice on them. From what I have read about Omkareshwar it sounds well worth a visit. We had actually planned to go there on a previous visit from Mandu but for some reason we changed our plans-- I can't remember why now! |
