I need to decide how long to stay in Khajuraho as I've pretty much decided to splurge on the money but save on the time and fly there from Mumbai (where I land) on the way to Varanasi. I could get a flight on Tues 8 Dec (arriving Khajuraho 1.05 pm) and then could carry on to Varanasi on Fri 13 Dec (sounds a bit ominous though!) or Sat 14 Dec. So would 2 1/2 days be enough time to see the good stuff or is 3 1/2 days the better option? Thanks very much.

I would say 2 1/2 days is long enough to see what is there unless you are a student of Indian art and architecture. At the end of that length of time you will probably have had enough of "rickshaw madam, guide madam, one pen, five rupees" It's a pleasant enough place but the whole town seems to run on tourism and it's not easy to wander around without people latching on, especially would-be guides at the Eastern temple complex. I think guides are not allowed into the main temple group so it's peaceful. So it should be for the foreigners entrance fee that they charge. Enjoy your visit. |

I recommend...
I think 2 1/2 days is good especially if you want to relax a bit. There isn't much to see in Khajuraho itself except for the temples (which are AMAZING). When I was there last year we took a short 1/2 hour autorik. to a national park which was really nice. Beware if you go because we climbed around a huge rock landscape/gorge area with waterfall and after finishing the guide told us that sometimes they open the dam-gates farther up river floading the whole area and taking poor wandering souls with it.
Otherwise I recommend staying at the hotel ZEN (If you are coming from the directon of the bus stand it is one of the first hotels situated on the left hand side of the main draf walking toward the western temple complex. And the Italian food at the rooftop "Italian" restaurant on the main drag is wonderful after weeks of Indian Cusine. cheers! Cant' wait to be back only 2 weeks to go before my flight leaves!!! |

I agree with everything except the review on the food at the "Italian" restaurant - yeuch! Make sure you walk out to the real village of Khajuraho (i.e. not the clump of hotels and trinket shops near the main Chandela temples) and see the old Jain temples, too. There's also an interesting old palace on the route to Panwa falls worth a gander.
