Jain temples - Gwalior-Jhansi
![]() I've heard somebody mentioning a really nice group of Jain Temples somewhere between Gwalior and Jhansi . I don't know the name of the place. Does somebody know where they are ? How to get there ? Are there places to stay in the area, are is it easier on a day trip from either Gwalior or Jhansi ? Last edited by dreamsyndicate : Jul 27th, 2003 at 02:09. |

Deogarh, Uttar Pradesh, near Jhansi. You can stay there or at Jhansi (Khajuraho and Orchha are available from Jhansi too...).

Could'nt find Deogarh on the map samsara!! give us a clue!!
Dreamsyndicate it could be that you are talking about Datia which also lies between Gwalior and Jhansi, this place also has jain temples. It's about 15 minutes by train from Jhansi!! It looked quite something from the train!! I hope to visit there later in the year as a day trip out of Orchha, just an idea!! |

And there are Jain temples at Sonagiri too, about 70?, actually maybe Sonagiri is the place you heard about, which is also an excursion from Jhansi or Gwalior. There are lots of excursions from Jhansi, including a wildlife park, Shivpuri and a famous battle ground. In Gwalior isn't there a Jain cliff sculpture area or something like that, but they aren't temples.
There are 31 Jain temples within the fort at Deogarh Uttar Pradesh. But it seems Sonagiri has twice as many (deogarh is quite near sonagiri) - here is a Jain link about Sonagiri - http://www.jainteerth.com/jainteerth...h/Sonagiri.asp Deogarh might be too small to be on your map. Jhansi is a main gateway to many places of touristic interest and easy to get to by rail. Jhansi is famous for the Rani of Jhansi. Last edited by Samsara : Jul 27th, 2003 at 06:06. |

Thanks samsara this area just gets better and better, I looked at Sonagiri and think this may have been the place I saw from the train!! I could only see the roofs but this looks like the place, I had it marked down as Datia (it is in the district of Datia)
Looks like I'll be spending a couple of days in Datia thanks to your info!! we stayed in Orcha last year and loved it and we decided to go back and do the area justice, the places to see just keep stacking up!! thanks!! |

Thanks a lot .
It was Sonagiri I was looking for (now i remember they mentioned that name .) I just visited the IR-website . There's a railway station, where some local trains stop . (Station-code SOR) From Jhansi it's just a half hour. Thanks a lot ! Ps. on the same website , i found this impressive looking place : http://www.jainteerth.com/jainteerth.../kundalpur.asp It says to be between Sagar Damoh and Jabalpur. Can't find it on my map though. The photo looks lovely! I don't know where it is though. When I did a google search I came across this article on architectural heritage in the Damoh district of MP (apparently near Khajuraho, three hours or so?) so it seems to be in the Damoh district -
http://www.mpinfo.org/english/articles/290102.htm Jabalpur is also the gateway to get to Kanha National Park, the setting Kipling was thinking about when he wrote The Jungle Book. Last edited by Samsara : Jul 27th, 2003 at 17:25. |

Just bringing this post on the main page again .
Somebody got some more info on this place ? http://www.jainteerth.com/jainteerth.../kundalpur.asp It says on the website : "Here so many Dharmshalas & Guest Houses equipped with modern facilities are available for pilgrims. Total accommodation about 184 Rooms, Mess & Beds are available." Does this mean it's only for Jain Pilgrims or would I'll be able to get a bed as well ? Any ideas ? |

I think if it's a big Jain pilgrimage centre probably you will get a bed somewhere, obviously there are a lot of beds there...I'm not Jain so I don't know but I would be careful, in that some sects will specifically let anyone sleep in the Dharmshala (which usually means religious accommodation provided by the religion or religious people of that faith) like the Sikhs in Amritsar whereas other sects specify it is only for certain very strict criteria.
But I'm sure if you just turn up there, no one is going to deny you a place to sleep, even if you may not fit the specifications of for any of the dharmshalas or pilgrim guest houses. Worst comes to worst, you will have no place to sleep at all but I can't really imagine that happening... |

It's a bit of the beaten track, it seems, so it would be good if you could post about the place after you've been there. You might already know about Jainism but just in case, they follow a Jain vegetarian diet and no animal products, including any personal items made from any leather are allowed inside temples.

Deogarh and Chanderi
regarding where Deogarh is, it's about 30km SSW of Lalitpur, which is in that UP bulge surrounded by MP that also includes Jhansi. I am mosdef planning on visiting there and Chanderi as well, which is nearby and has a fort and weavers.

From Khajuraho is was a five hour drive down to there. We shared a car with a Jain couple and shared the costs. It is very far the tourist circuit and there are no hotels to speak of. We stayed in the Dharamsala and only got a room because we were the only tourists and got Vip treatment. Most people slept under the stars. While there, myself and my wife have the honor of sitting down and talking one on one with the 'sly clad monks' and about the lifes that they lead now and the lifes that they gave up. Some of them spoke English and had normal jobs and gave it all up to become monks. It was very interesting and very courteous of them to give up there time to speak with us. Words cannot describe the time we had there. It was incredible. It is just a small village with many many jain temples all around it. For a tourist it is way off the beaten track and worthy of the trip. Keeping in mind that there is no hotels and no other tourists. It was definately the highlight of our trip. |
