Has anyone been to Chanderi?
Hi, has anyone been to Chanderi (MP)? It looks fantastic on the site
http://www.chandericluster.org/about.htm I am looking for something interesting for a couple of days around Orchha/Jhansi/Gwalior (I have 2 kids in tow, so it can't be temples & relaxing all day as I would like ....) I thought this place looked interesting also for a weaving tour?? Is there any place to stay there. Thanks! |

I just returned from 6 months in India (and back on indiamike after a while) and spent 3 months in Chanderi where I was working on a movie documentary on the master weavers there. To get there is a side trip from the Gwalior, Jhansi, Orcha, KJ route. Its about 4 hours drive South by car from Jhansi.
Its off the beaten track for the average tourist, but well worth a visit. Currently UNESCO and the State of Madhya Pradesh are in the works on making Chanderi a "Heritage Town" as it has 100s of monuments, temples, mosques, and constructions from 1400s and 1500s. Also there are over 3500 working hand looms making the world famous Chanderi saris there with many locals who will graciously take you into their homes to show you how hand weaves are made. here's a link to my web site on chanderi http://chanderifilm.com |
