Gwalior or Orccha?

I've the doubt if visiting Gwalior or Orccha and if possible to do it as a daytrip from Agra. Gwalior is a much bigger town but has quite a lot of interesting sites and isn't a tourist trap. Orccha on the other hand is smaller with green nature, a town of 5000 people and amazing palaces. It's about 1 hour 10 min to Gwalior by train and 2 h 30 min to Jhansi, and from there 14 km by rickshaw/taxi. I'd like to see both places but I'm not sure if we have the time. We'll be there in the end of August.

No doubt, Orchha. Is really an interesting place to stay few days even in the former Maharaja palace "Shees Mahal" for 800 Rupees.

I really enjoyed Orchha this past trip. It was a really relaxing place and the people were really friendly. If you are looking for days filled with lots of activity and sights you may be disappointed. If you are looking for a friendly quiet place with lots of natural beauty, this is for you. Having never been to Gwalior, I can't compare the two but highly recommend Orchha.

Same here, never been to Gwalior but definitely recommend Orchha very highly!!! It is one of the nicest places I have visited in India on my trip last year and really enjoyed my stay there for five days!!! Lots of places to walk around in and get lost in the many beautiful cenotaphs, old palaces and houses of the nobles and common men!!! I am sure you will love it there!!!

Cheers,
Aadil.

I've been to both and Orchaa wins! Gwalior does have some interesting sites but after that you're just in another Indian city with all the mayhem that entails! After Agra, Orchaa is the perfect place to recuperate.

Unfortunately didn't get to Orchha but did go to Gwalior, I would be going Orchha personally, I was disappointed that I went onto Gwalior instead of stopping in Orchha, I had a call to make and I made the wrong one that time.

Thanks to everybody!! It really seems as if Orchha is the kind of place I'm looking for during our trip and I'll include it into our program.

We are going to be in Orccha in July. The Sheesh Mahal is booked up. Any other suggestions. We are spulging so budget is not a problem.

Orcha- tourist India
Gwalior- historical india

If you are interested in places of historical interest, Gwalior figures prominently.

if you're pressed for time, a few hours atop the Gwalior fort is an option

There are a couple of four/five star resorts near the Betwa river and they sure are pretty expensive for what they offer. One is The Orchha Resort (Tel. No: 91-7680-252222, 252223, 252224, 252678; TeleFax: 91-7680-252677). Nothing like the Sheesh Mahal for the pleasure of staying in the royal palace built for the Moghul Emperor Jehangir. Hope there are some cancellations and you get to stay there.

Cheers,
Aadil.

Place to stay in Orccha

Thanks. We've e-mailed them & asked to be notified of cancellations. If Jhansi is nearby does staying there make more sense? If so, are there any recommendations?

There are places in Jhansi too but I would still go for Orchha!!! The place is really very beautiful and I would rather get up to a lovely sunrise there than in Jhansi!!! Hope you get what you are looking for and enjoy the place too.

Cheers,
Aadil.

Hi Janv,
I've read many good reviews in Internet about BETWA COTTAGES, and it's also commented in many travel guides. They have bungalows with air-cooler from 800 rps. The phone number is 07680-25-26-18 (but it's best to check this up as phone numbers seem to have changed lately). You can also have a look at some reviews as for example (with photos): http://www.indiaresortssurvey.com/re...p?Resid=16 52
There you can find photos. According to some guide books (Routard) it's best to avoid The Orccha Resort, because it's only 100 m from the cenotaphs and they don't care about the environment. At Jhansi there aren't any good choices so the two best options at Orchha are Hotel Sheesh Mahal or Betwa Cottages. Good luck!! Cheers, Marco Polo

Yes, Betwa Cottages seem to be a bit better than the other small guest houses in and around Orchha and the Orchha Resorts was a lousy place according to me for the price that they charged and the food was really bad and halfcooked!!! When I complained about it they did not even bother to say sorry and just took the dish away!!! No replacement or apologies. I just had a meal out there and saw the facilities there which I did not like at all. So I would not really recommend it to anyone unless they do not have any other option. The airconditioned rooms are the only good thing about the place but then they charge a lot just for that.

Cheers,
Aadil.
