First trip to India

Hello everyone,

I going to be traveling in India for the first time form Dec.22 - Jan.5. I'm trying to plan a trip for me and my girlfriend and we're not sure where to go yet. We mostly want to stay in Madhya Pradesh as well as around Mumbai. So far we definitely want to see Pachmarhi, Sanchi, Jabalpur, and Matheran. Other possibilities are Ellora and Ajanta, the meteor crater, and Mandu.

Are the first four cities I mentioned manageable in 2 weeks? Would it be wise to plan more stops along the way? Lees stops? Are these places going to be insanely crowded around Christmas/New Years? Also, any information anyone has about these cities would be much appreciated.

Crumbling palaces, mosques and chhatris in a spectacular setting, and hardly any tourists. I was there at Diwali almost exactly this time last year and I just had an amazing time. A great place to break a trip around MP. I preferred it to Ajanta and Ellora to be honest. Blows Sanchi away as well, unless you're really into your Buddhist teachings and whatnot. Sanchi's been restored to within an inch of its life.
