Delhi, Agra, Orccha, Khajuraho
I'm thinking of going from Delhi to Agra to Orccha, and possibly Khajuraho. I have only a few days...any thoughts on whether it makes sense to go by car, or by train? Is it much faster by train? I have a trusted driver, so it would be nice to drive if it's not too slow.

You could do it by car though it would definitely be slower and bumpy!! You could take the bhopal shatabdi from Delhi to Agra and the same train the next day to Jhansi.
Orchha is on the route from Jhansi to Khajuraho. You will be able to comfortably do Jhansi in an hour or two(if you're that close you might as well check out the Fort there) and Orchha in 3 or 4 hours. Unless you're thinking of staying over at Orchha. There is no train station at Khajuraho, the nearest train stations are Satna and Jhansi. You can get your hotel at Khajuraho to pick you up at the station, do Jhansi and Orchha and then get to Khajuraho. It takes about 3-4 hrs just to get to Khajuraho without taking in Jhansi fort or Orchha. Khajuraho does have an airport so you might want to consider air travel. Do try and make it to Khajuraho though - its definitely worth the trouble getting there. Here are some pictures from my trip there -http://www.flickr.com/photos/vishakajayakumar/ |

The roads are good, so it should not be bumpy, but it would definitely be slower as there is lots of traffic including heavy commercial vehicles. I would recommend the Bhopal Shatabdi to Agra from New Delhi station or if you don't fancy waking early in Delhi winter try the Taj Express from Nizamuddin station. Jhansi station is the nearest station to Orchha (15-20 kilometres) - just a half hour drive. If you are travelling to Orchha, you should definitely also go on to Khajuraho (160 kms), which is another 3-3.5 hours by road. Unfortunately, Khajuraho is not near any major train line so Jhansi station would be the best bet and again the Bhopal Shatabdi would come in handy. Be prepared for a bumpy ride to Khajuraho. If you are including Fatehpur Sikri (but you can't just not go to Fatehpur Sikri) with Agra, then that ride too will be bumpy. How many days do you have in total for your travel?
