We read a review which said that the food was terrible and the place was quite run down, relative to its tariffs. That was somebody who visited it last year. It may have improved. Anyone been there recently?

Average room rate looks to be around Rps. 8000-9000. Seems a bit high (from a quick google for photos of) for a park accomodation.
You're probably paying through the nose for the "Kipling" moniker ..... and the chance to bath Tara the famous elephant.

You're usually so tired with all that jungley fresh air breathed in - at the end of the day anything above a no frills guesthouse with four walls, cot and half decent pillow might be overkill.

In 2005 we stayed in the Baghira resort inside the camp. This place is owned by the MP tourism. It is quit simple but we realy enjoyed it. We payed around 1100rs per night for a cabin. There is also a new hotel from MP tourism at the Mukti gate.

AHAA!!! Thanks Vonkla, that's what I want to hear about! We like simple style accommodation. It's so frustrating surfing the web, you would be forgiven for thinking that the only available choice is tour groups to fancy resorts! Also great to know that you can actually sleep inside the national park.

A natural limit to the web is that the more down-to-earth places may well not be on there. Leading to the easy impression that what's not on there doesn't exist.

Sort of an extension of the guidebook confusion in the days of print.

Hi, I first went to Kipling in the early '80's, and have returned up to 15 times since. It is deliberately rustic, being eco-friendly in the building materials. Simple and comfortable is the theme. Being so far from tourist 'civilization', meal ingredients are local, thus hotel spreads are not there.
From the beginning, visitors were treated as house guests, and they were individually catered-for. With their own vehicles and naturalists, game drives are great. Many of the lodges that have sprung up in recent times charge by the km. for the drives, so it is worth them getting as far and fast as possible. From my first visit, when there were but 2 or so camps, last year I saw a bank of more than 20 signs on approaching Kanha.
I have met some famous people there, some of whom visit to see Tara, the elephant. I am looking forward to my next visit, (tacked onto some other exploration of India).
