Unhappy When is the best time to book a hotel before arrival?

this may sound silly, but my friend and I are going to India for the first time and I am wondering when is the best time to book a hotel? We arrive on August 17th. Any suggestions please.
Thank you

I'd definitely try now to book a hotel for the night you arrive and maybe even for two or three nights, just so you can rest and become acclimated.

You're certainly close enough now. In trying to book a hotel for my Nov 2 arrival in Mumbai, I've been told by several hotels that they aren't taking reservations this early; the answer to your question might be 30 days, especially if you're trying to book one of the LP or Rough Guide hotels that lots of their readers favor. OTOH, not sure how many people want to brave the August heat, so those "guidebook" hotels might be a bit slow right now. I'd book the first night since you'll be wasted from the long trip and then do some shopping around if you're going to be in a heavily-hoteled area.

Do it by the end of the week. Its a big weekend in India and while 17th is a Monday and you should not have a problem it would be best to cancel out the risk this time..
