When is peak season?

Hi all
Apologies if this post is in the wrong section but it does refer to accomodation issues.
My son (28) and I (57) are doing a 'see as much as you can' trip to South India for 3 weeks in February and I would like to know if we need to pre-book hotels or is it ok to just turn up. Having read many posts I get the impression that Dec/Jan are the peak months, is that so?
Briefly our itinery is Hospet,Maderai,Kanyakumari,All eppey,Munnar,Ooty,Dubare Elephant Camp, Goa and finally a night in Mumbai. This is will also include several overnight trains (pre-booking, I've read all the good advice on this site, so fingers crossed for when I get onto the India Rail website).

Dec/Jan are the peak months, and then mid/end April to June.

You really don't need to book in advance in February especially at the places you are going to. You will get decent discounts at that time.

Except maybe Mumbai. I would book there (and maybe any other big cities) in advance. Depending on budget, suitable hotels are sometimes hard to get last minute.

Dec / Jan are the peak seasons , but in some cities, February is crowded too..Kerala and karnataka are usually booked and if you are travelling during weekends, then most hill stations and wild life sanctuaries can also get crowded..so I suggest that you plan a bit in advance ..places I would want to book early are Allepy, Munnar, Ooty,Dubare and Mumbai ..

As you're only going for three weeks, and intend to book your trains in advance, then I'd suggest also booking your accommodation for the nights that you know for certain where you're going to be. You don't really want to be wasting time looking for accommodation every time you arrive in a city.

Thankyou all for the quick replies. I'll have a look around the IM hotels section for recommended places. Will it suffice to book the first hotel from the UK and all others as we travel.

I would say yes, though backpakker's point about weekends is a good one.

Gives you flexibility, is one advantage.
