Cheapest - Brihd Maharashtra Bhawan (Great Maharashtra Building) dormitory cost me Rs.25 per day breakfast included (in year 1999). Breakfast was one of the best I have been ever served in hotels.
Costliest - I am a miser myself. Rs.1000 per day at Hotel Simang (Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh) (in year 2001). |

Most expensive i stayed in was Kurumba Island at Maldives - US$ 200 per night for breakfast and dinner.
Least expensive was Rs. 150 at Kukke Subrahmanya. I din't have a choice actually, all hotels were booked. There was no bathroom in the room. We had to use a common bathroom outside. The least expensive hotel i stayed in, by choice was Hotel Raiban at Alleppy. Neat place for Rs. 275 per night. Last edited by lonelyaztec : Jun 12th, 2007 at 17:43. Reason: incomplete info |

My cheapest was at Shipra Lodge, Pune. I paid Rs. 75.00 per day for a stay of over 3 months before moving to a rented apartment.
The most expensive place I have stayed and paid myself was Taj Land's End, Mumbai. Paid Rs. 12000.00 per night. At company expense: 4-5 stars in diff places. |

My cheapest was Rs 3500/- a month in Chennai.
Shivam Guest house. I made friends with the Manager. (a village fellow who did not speak English or Hindi). After a few weeks, we bought down the rent to Rs 3000/- (if I did not ask for a receipt) |

Cheapest was probably $5 for one week at someone's house in Colva Beach Goa in 1976, 2 people. One small wood slatted bed (lucky we were skinny then), no mattress, no glass in windows. Loved it.
Most expensive was last year at the Pushkar Camel Mela. A "luxury" tent for $130 a night--included 2 excellent meals. It was worth about $5 BUT Pushkar accommodations are a total ripoff for the mela. To get a real luxury tent would have cost well over $200. Nevertheless, it was great fun. |

Cheapest - 4 of us paid a total of 500 rupees to a guard to open up a private 3 bedroom bungalow in goa in calangute - the bungalow opened up right at the beach and the guard was so happy, he even made us breakfast! Obviously, the owner had no inkling!
Most expensive - even though I stay in Bombay, I was so smashed one night that I ended up paying Rs.20,000 to stay at some room in the Taj President when I was about 18-19. Swiped my dad's card who promptly took it away after he received the bill. |

Cheapest place i stayed was in dharmastala which is a temple town . Has a famous shivs temple. It is close to sakleshpur on the way to mangalore. I paid 30 Rs for a day. It's a beautiful place surrounded by hills. But difficult to get a room since almost the whole town including the hotels are owned by temple authorities and there will be many devotees to visit the shiva temple who would like to stay there for a day or two.

The power of wife(wives)
Quote:
It is said British would have ruled India for another 200 years if they would not have brought their wives. Apparently British men were having a great time going native. |

Good thread. The most expensive being the Taj Fishermans Cove at $250 a night. The cheapest Palolem at around Rs.400 a night if I remember correctly. But have also camped outdoors in the mountains in Uttaranchal for free.

other than free, the cheapest true hotel I stayed in was 40rps a night, April 2007. This was a small stone hut in the Garwhal. Its used more as a way point for the cowherders as its miles from anywhere. nothing more than a mat and blanket on the floor, but so warm... definatly the most atmospheric hotel i stayed in.
The most ive paid for a single room was 325rps in Bhopal. It was a fair price. Biggest rip-off was in Gorukhpur, the following night actually; there was a train accident and most trains were cancelled so there was a crazy rush to the hotels opposite the station. I managed to get a grotty, windowless room for 120rps. It reaked of smoke, the floor was filthy and the bedsheets were so stained ive never been so happy to turn out the lights. If it wasnt for the trains its usual price was around 50rps. Biggest bargain; possibly the Hotel Swastica in Jaisalmer for 100rps a night in peak season. Friendly, honest service can be worth gold in such places. |

Usually I stay for free with relatives. But we spent around $26 for a room in the village inside Corbett Park (and my wife insisted that was a rip-off since they charged us the foreign rate even though my wife has an Indian passport). I have not stayed there but I hear the Rambaugh Palace in Jaipur is over $350/night and I'd gladly pay that.
