Stayed for free at the Golden Temple in Amritsar (although I donated 50 Rupees on my way out the door). Also slept for free in my hammock on the Andaman's.....

Cheapest I paid for was probably 30 Rupees in Omkareshwar....

Most was about 700 Rupees for one night in Mumbai......

Cheapest: the Tourist Bungalow dormitory in Bodh Gaya. Rs 10, when there were 12 rupees to a dollar.

Most Expensive: not sure if it was Fairlawn in Kolkata or The Sofina in Bangalore -- but my price info has disappeared from the hotel listing and I don't remember what it cost for a clean carpet, lots of hot water, and indifferent food.

Couldn't get away with this now....

Free: Sleeping in a chair in the lobby of the Imperial in Delhi after arriving in the middle of the night on my first trip to India. Officially checked in at around 9 am to my room which was US $35 a night, in 1983.

Most expensive: US $150 a night, in Jan. '07, at The Bangala in Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu. All wonderful Chettinad meals included.

the first time i visited india, in 2000, i rented a 2bdrm flat with a kitchen, DR and LR for approx. 2.56 U.S. per night. Of course, the indian doctor that i was working with rented it for me, so i think he worked out a deal for me. the thing is, i could not get a phone hooked up because the last tenant didn't pay their bill it was also an issue with getting electricity. the dr. had to pay the previous renters bill before they'd hook me up...

other than that, my cheapest room was 200 rupees a night. the most i've paid is around Rs 600. some of the best rooms i've had were the least expensive. i spend little time in a room, so why pay a fortune for it when the money can be spent on fine dining or flying or buying quality crafts?

oh wait, stayed at the golden temple for 50 rupees a night.

Most Expensive = Oberoi Grand in Kolkatta at $270 a night although the tour company took alot of that as it was a replacement for something cheaper that was booked up.

Cheapest = Earth floored barn about 3 feet high in Tshoka, Sikkim on Kangchenjunga trek for nothing when everything else in town was booked up.

Cheapest must have been my stay at Palolem, Goa in 1995 where I think I paid somewhere in the region of 70rps or cheaper to stay in a thatched shack. About 48 rps. to the £ then. There was no other accommodation there at the time. Those were the days!

Most expensive was the Park Hotel Calcutta courtesy of IC who cancelled my flight to the Andamans twice!

The railway retiring room at Jaynagar was RS30 each for a twin room, clean and mozzy nets too! No power after 9pm though.

Most expensive was the honeymoon suite at the Lake Pichola Hotel in Udaipur, about RS5000.

As it is, I went from the cheapest to the most expensive and back to cheapest within a week.

I was staying in Gokarn for 50 rps a night in a room with nothing else than a mattress. My father came to visit me in Bombay and splurged on the Intercontinental on Marine Drive, probably at 300-400 USD per room.

The contrast was absurd. I hadn't had a hot shower in a month. The room had a 42" plasma-TV. Wine. A menu of different pillows. Roof-top swimming pool.

Yet I was happy to return to my mattress in Gokarn, only to find a rat turd waiting for me on my pillow.
