Has anyone been to Hotel Sheesh Mahal in Orchha.... sounds really nice....can't afford the 2990 Rs room but maybe the 490 Rs room is worth the splurge?? Anyone been there?

Haven't stayed there but it's in a nice location just across the bridge from the village with good views of the surrounding temples. Suggest you ask to see the room and then decide. There are a couple of cheap hotels in the main street leading to the "live" temple but they are pretty basic, if not downright depressing. We spent a night in one of them, then moved to the Palki Mahal, which although a bit basic also, has the neccessary amenties and a great location.

For more info on the Palki Mahal see the thread in the hotels section.

Smile Sheesh Mahal

I've stayed there, but I didn't spend Rs 3,000. There are only a few rooms. The one you are talking about is kind of on the roof and has it's own porch/sitting area. I think there are only 6 or 7 rooms. The room at the top of the stairs to the right of the front entrance is fine. Narrow room with good view. Two twin beds. Large bathroom behind to large medieval looking wooden doors. You have easy access to the roof. Great place for chai--the roof I mean. Because it is so small, they do sometimes book up, so an advance reservation is a good idea.
