udaivilas Jaipur and Shahi palace Jaisalmer

Hello, I am wondering about these two hotels. Anyone who has stayed here, can they please confirm if the bathrooms are western and with tubs?

I can only tell you about Shahi Palace in Jaisalmer; the bathroom we had was certainly western (relax; in five weeks, the only times we ever even saw an Indian toilet was on trains and in one backpacker establishment in Bundi; I recall that in Jalgaon we rolled up at one intreresting-looking hotel and asked for a room, and the proprietor said "no", and directed us to another hotel three doors away. When we asked was he REALLY full, he replied that his hotel had Indian toilets and, therefore, we wouldn't find it suitable; hotels know which side their bread is buttered on!) However, I can't tell you about the tubs at Shahi Palace ... we only took showers. Maybe some of their rooms would have tubs, so you ought to send them an email and ask them. The proprietors are VERY helpful, and speak English well enough to respond to emails. If they don't have tubs, maybe they will know a similar establishment nearby that does.

I have the email address for Shahi Palace, but right at this minute I can't access it, owing to a problem with yahoo.com; if you need it, I can certainly supply it for you, with pleasure. It's a great place to stay, one of our favourite places in India. There are a lot of good comments about it on this site (some of them from me), and possibly the email address is listed in some of these.

Me again.... because now you are asking not only about our hotel in Jaisalmer, but our hotel in Jaipur as well! The Umaid Bhawan certainly had a bathtub in the room we booked... I remember that the bathroom itself was bigger than the bedrooms in some other places we stayed! We normally don't stay in luxury places like this, but at the time we were booking, the Umaid Bhawan had a special deal (available only from their website) of 800 rupees for a double.... and they gave us a free upgrade to a better-grade room when we arrived, because the people who occupied our booked room the night before were slow vacating. At 800 rupees it was great; but if you can't get a price in that area, there are other recommendations in Jaipur that have been mentioned lately on this site.... one is still a current posting, and the hotel (whose name I can't recall) got three or four eager endorsements in the same thread.

We normally reply to all mails - even if we are full we make sure the enquiry is answered so travellers can consider other hotels.

Incidentally, Umaid bhawan is certainly a good choice but do not expect the old rates to be valid, specially in the high season!

It's nice that a place has bathtubs, it really appeals to Europeans, but to fill a bathtub with water in a desert state where every drop of water is important is another thing altogether.

The Udaivilas has been voted by some travel magazines as one of the best ones in the world. So that should give you some comfort. You can check the web site oberoihotels.com for details.

Shahi palace was a great hotel, don't worry ! there was no bathtub just a shower but it's in the desert, dude! Why do you need a bathtub? LOL

Umaid bhawan also didn't have a bathtub, at least not the room where I stayed, but the shower & bathroom was very modern and everything worked, even hot water.

I highly recomment both these hotels, I stayed there in November/December and couldn't be happier about both places.

In case you weren't sure..

I also stayed at Shahi and it was by far the nicest hotel I stayed in (I used to stay in 200 rupees hotels..)

The room was 350 rps.

It's clean, quiet and very nice. Good restaurant on top.
But there was only a cold shower
The water probably runs hot around 4 pm after a day of sun though..

I also booked my camel trip with them and was not disapointed. I think I paid 600 rupees for 2-day trip. Honest hassle-free camel ride.

So you get my vote for Shahi !
