to book or not to book lodging during Jan.
My wife and I will be travelling around southern India during the month of January. We are not exactly sure where we want to go yet; just hoping to go with the flow. Will we have a hard time finding mid-range places to stay if we do not book ahead, or can we expect to just find something when we arrive?
We are planning on spending time in Goa, Kerala, and around Chennai. Thanks for your advice! Jesse |

India remains largely over subscribed with hotles and I've never had a problem finding a place to stay in all my travels so yes you can travel on a whim and find lodgings when you get there or just ask the hotel front desk to phone ahead for you to the next hotel of choice!!

I always always book my first hotel and arrange a pick up from the airport. From there is depends.
I would say for Goa in Jan, yes, please book ahead. I was there about that time a few years back and was lucky to find anything at all in Vagator. I haven't been to the other places you mention so I can't say for sure. What I like to do is to phone ahead a day before departing one place for another. Sometimes I just go and see what I can find on arrival. With the exception of Vagator I have never had a problem. If there is some big local event / festival going on you will certainly want to book ahead however.

If there is a place that you have chosen and want to stay there I would book ahead. If you are not too concerned then you can probably find somewhere to stay.

even if rooms may be available, I prefer to book ahead. i feel valuable time is lost looking for a room instead of seeing the sights. At bare minimus, I would take Cyberhippie's advice and ask your hotel to call ahead and make the booking before you get there.

If you are going to Bangalore, you should have plenty of alternative hotels in mind and book as far in advance as possible; that's the only place I've ever had problems finding a place to stay.

I would definately suggest booking in advance as the hotels in most of the cities in south india are full due to the heavy tourist season in these months.
if you need any help please write to me cmsach@hotmail.com regards chander |
