if it's the one i think it is, it's a bit sterile and hotelly, nothing special, it has what it should have, but doesn't inspire. But i haven't stayed there since 1997, so not really recent!

Looked at in '00 in my opinion was a 3 star hotel @ 4 star cost. Carpets were effervescing a bit of musty aroma. I passed. Looked comfy though and good location.

Stayed there a few months back in August. For the prices they charge, pretty much avoidable. Great location - very close to CP / Railway Station etc. Rooms are also ok - but I stayed on a floor that was recently renovated. But renovation going on other floors is a nuisance. very bad GYM - even a village Gym would be better. Though the restaurants are nice.

thanks guys, I guess based on your feedback I will pass.
Any suggestions for a fab little/big swoosh hotel to end our travels in comfort? Our budget would be in the region of 150USD per night for a double room.

Thanks again,
D.

Delhi Hotels

It's not an easy question to answer. Hotels in Delhi are a bit like a Bazaar sale!

If you don't mind last minute bookings you can do quite well for $150.00 depending on current occupancy, timing, and how/who you negotiate with. 5 star deluxe may be within range! If you book long distance you'll most probably pay the rack rate which the $150.00 limit sort of falls in that uneasy range between 4 star and 5 star.

hi Melglo,
I havent had much success with this thread so I contacted someone thru the thread who is Delhi based and asked him to do a small research and he also came back with the verdict that the hotel sucks.

However, I have been highly recomended the Park Royal Intercontinental hotel on Nehru place in Delhi and if you book and PAY in advance ( this is something I am having a problem with!) the reat for a decent room is 120USD.

I might go with this one, despite the prepayment as we will be there for New Years and I'd like to know that I have something nice booked to go to, rather than take a chance. I am taking chances thru the rest of my trip.

let me know if you find any other better options.

In response to the initial post, i would say Park is a pretty good property. The place has undergone quite a few changes in the recent past with a new popular night club and a very good restaurant and coffee shop. I havent seen the rooms but i'm assuming they would be like any other five star property. From what i understand their rates are also competitive as compared to the other five star hotels. The location from your point of view might be convenient given its proximity to the CP market and the fact that theres a lot to choose from in that area.

Park Royal Intercontinental has pros and cons....Overall It looks bigger and better (I can see it from my office window) and is certainly fancier than the Park and the rooms are good but i dont like the location as its right next to a huge office complex. Good for a business traveller but might be a little depressing for a tourist but thats my opinion. Having said that the location otherwise is central in the context of South Delhi and there are several shopping areas, restaurants etc. within reasonable driving distance.

Another five star option you may want to consider is the Marriott hotel near Saket in South Delhi. I know the rates are pretty competitive and the rooms are nice. The restaurants are quite decent too but they dont have a night club etc. if thats your thing.

Thanks Karan. That was quite informative. I think I will go for the Intercontinental as I am told it is located next to the fabric market, which is very handy for me. And I will check out the Park for future visits.

The park Hotel in Delhi

Look at the Shangrila, I dont quite know what kind of prices you will get now.. but in the peak season, they would be cheaper than other similar hotels.. rooms are slighly smaller than many deluxe hotels.. but well designed.. plasma TVs in all rooms.. they would have now got their alcohol permits etc.. I went there just a couple of days after they opened.. was given a grand tour by the GM.. the coffee shop buffet was perhaps the classiest, coffess shop buffet I have seen.

Since they have just opened up in Delhi, their prices may be fairly resonable..but I guess, during the peak season, still somewhat higher than your target, unless your company can negoatiate a large discount.

Other places to check out are, the Vasant Continental in Vasant Vihar, situated in a nice friendly sorroundings.. should be in the $ 110-120 range, so would be Surya Sofitel .. unless they have raised the prices withe current exuberance..

Claridges has refurbished its restaurants etc.. and I am told even the rooms.. they had old plumbing etc.. which they were fixing sometime ago, when I saw the rooms.. about a year.. were doing other renovations, but I have not seen the finished products (i.e. the rooms) the bar and the restaurants have of course become extremely popular. The rooms should be within your target price.

I am booked at the Marriott with my points--but how far away in real taxi travel time is it, say from Connaught place? In traffic?

It depends on traffic/time of day. Early sunday morning - your there in a blink of an eye. Rush hour, PM/CM convoy, or protest - you might take an hour or 2. Give yourself 20-30 minutes to be safe in most cases.
