We shall be spending two nights at Tabo. Can any one give details of some hotels or govt guest houses to stay?

Jesus...!
Look at those atrocious rates...! The best option always remains the Monastery itself...! The Monastery Guest House with its quaint wooden staircase and beams and huge glasses on the ceiling of the courtyard to let the natural light in beats everything else in Tabo... If you are at a place like Tabo, might as well experience the charm of the Tabo Monastery Guest House itself...! There are a couple of other hotels in Tabo too - all decent. And the rates are ten times lower than what has been mentioned... Just one thing - For food, at any of the restaurants in Tabo, be prepared to wait for an hour (on average) after you place your order... A good idea would be to place your order for dinner the moment you get back in the evening, and only then go to your room and freshen up... Then get back in time for your dinner...! Cheers...! |

Haven't been there myself but am also planning to go this summer..
My Lonely Planet from 2003 lists the gompa guesthouse prices as Rs 50 for dorms, rooms w/ balconies w/ view to the court yeard for Rs 250. Himalayan Ajanta Hotel, "peaceful and plesant" rooms w/ shared bathroom Rs 150. It says the best foodplace is Mount Everest Restaurant and Millenium Monastery Restaurant behind the gompa guesthouse. No phone numbers listed. Maybe try to contact the monastery at http://www.aarogya.com/tabo/contactus.html I doubt prices in these places have risen to the heights of the Banjara Heights mentioned by Mousourik, but inflation is human nature! :-) I will probably go for staying at the monastery like Solo Trekker. Then you can definitely arrange for a monk to wake you up for morning puja etc. A nice way to start the day. Best wishes Lars |

I have a confession to make...
After being forced outta bed by my travel-mate from Spain, the two of us rushed out to be in time for the morning prayers inside the main Monastery... And I managed to sneek in a pic on my digicam with all those monks praying... A No-No in the Monastery... Penance...! I promise that on my next trip...! And I know I shall be forgiven...! Cheers...! |

In most gompas I visited in Zanskar photography was allowed. But I tried to refrain from taking pictures with flash when I was near frail old thangkas/paintings. By the way, a warning about "Morning" puja - I attended one near Padum, I thought it would be an hour or so, but it lasted almost 6 hours! So you may get more than you ask for! But was my most memorable experience from that entire summer.![]() Not a good photo, but does document my viewpoint for that long puja and the fact that the abbot didn't exactly delight in my presence. Best wishes Lars |

Amen...!
Yeah... Most Gompas don't have any issues... But what I was referring to was a huge congregation of monks (say around 60 odd), chanting away their Mantras, all with their eyes (hopefully) closed, and the Head-Monk seated on a high throne overlooking the proceedings, albeit, with his eyes closed too...! That situation definitely didn't allow me or anyone else taking pics - Anyways, I did; and now I have confessed...! Cheers...! |

Hi! For some reasons last October I spent a (free)night in Tabo's Banjara and I can confirm that the rooms are greatly overrated. The gompa guest house is a place with some character, but the rooms in Trojan (if it's still there)are much much better and not much more expensive, the restaurant being the best in town. For good accomodation including home staying you can try to ask Sonam in Kunzaum Top cafè.

I haven't been to Tabo,
but I think the exact time may vary a bit - according to how much preparation needs to be done, etc. You just ask in the monastery the day before. Maybe they will tell you to come at 5.. but then maybe the lama doesn't show up until 7. Not all pujas have an audience, so there might not be any hurry for the lama who drew the short straw and got the morning shift. You could be left freezing outside, contemplating the futility of early morning existence outside a warm bed for a few hours. ![]() But if you slept in the monastery you might be able to hear when it is on - it's probably ok to bump in as long as you don't make a lot of noise. Best wishes Lars |

6.00 a.m. as in July 2007...
But yes, there's no hard n fast rule... The younger lamas, some of them younger than ten, manage to trudge their way into the Main Prayer Hall while rubbing their sleepy eyes, even upto 30 minutes after the Prayer has commenced... The discipline that the lamas observe is to be seen to be believed... Wish one could inculcate atleast some of the aspects in our own busy lives... Cheers...! |
