Hello

Been reading the posts for a few weeks and it's been a big help with planning our India trip, finally got round to ringing a few places to stay and have booked the Star View for Delhi for 300rp with an airport pick up for 400rp and the leela paying guest house in varanasi for 250rp - on the weight of the review here.

Has anyone stayed at these hotels? Nervous now as it's reality and we're flying on saturday! One other thing, on an airport pickup, do the people have name plaquards?

Welcome to IM as well as to INDIA. Last October stayed in Shivam International ( one of the Star goup of hotels in Paharganj , New Delhi ) & the room & service was ok. Yes , on an airport pickup, people do have name plaquards. So dont worry & get panic. Simply njoy the trip .

star view

Just booked for myself in October , and yes the pick up service is great...For a little more Rs/. you dont have to put up with all the hassle of commissioned taxi drivers on your first day ( even trouble if you but a ticket from the pre paid kiosk) , believe me... It is great way to find your feet and get yourself acquainted with India at an easier pace...Delhi aiport is mind blowing, i remember the first time i walked through the departure doors and was hit with a sea of people all wanting to give their services.

Enjoy your time in India and the magic it will unfold to you ...

happy days

I wrote the review for the Leela, although I had stayed at the Shiva Ganges. I did look at all the different rooms on offer at the Leela on my last day in Varanasi, and although they were more basic than the Shiva, the Leela offered:

- backup power during load shedding (four hours every day)
- internet service with several terminals
- a rooftop restaurant

...the Shiva doesn't offer these, at three times the price. People seem to love the Shiva, but personally I found the host a bit insincere; he loads the charm on with a shovel. He might suck most of his customers in, but he was visibly pissed off when I mentioned I had changed some money in the marketplace (as he'd lost an opportunity to profit, presumably). One of the locals I chatted to nearby described him as "a real businessman" and he truly is. Anyway I suppose I shouldn't bag him as I already got flamed for doing so in the hotels section.

Unfortunately there didn't seem to be many hotels of a reasonable standard in the old city. Good luck!

Thanks for the reassurances people the man at the Leela sounded nice - in a sincere way and made sure we knew to ring him from the station to pick us up which i thought was cool, just pleased to have found an affordable guesthouse ON the ganges as we love rivers and we're going to rishikesh to see the ganges up there. i'll post a review when we return.

Anelegantchaos - we've always taxied it alone but at 2:45am i don't think so, need an easy easing into the city lol, and star view was one of the few whose a) phone number worked b) had ok reviews and c) offerered a pick up - the RAK wouldn't

Just finished ironing, got to drop the cat off at a friends, take my plants to be looked after, and it will just get crazier after this...

Ellie

ps: anyone got a firm favourite place in rishikesh?

Me & Mrs Chaos feel the same way. we will be travelling totally on our vibes for 3mths , so its nice to know at 3am you will picked up with no trouble and taken to your exact destination. Believe me this means a lot on any visit to India. Infact it means a lot to us on our 5th visit and i love local transport . It gives us just that little bit of time to adjust into India and then it makes us realise why we are her again ....

maybe see you on the road ..

Star group "no problem sir"

The Star group offers good basic budget accomodation.
As for their pickup service well I've used it 5 times now without a hitch, even when my flight was delayed for 3 hours, there they were waiting with my name on a placard!
These days they don't even bother with a placard, they just give me a wave as I step out of arrivals, it's like coming home!

Happy Traveling

As adventurous as we are with destinations and doing things on our tod, i know i couldn't do with a first experience being a haggle in a taxi, in the dark at 3am, just not right for such an epic place so i definately hear you.

When are you going? We arrive in delhi on the 5th and will be travelling round via varanasi, rishikesh, haridwar and agra, wish it were for longer like you!

Cyber, comforted to hear they wait, thanks for posting.

Leela - i just rang them, searched the web but no website or email
