Shivlinga Tourist Complex, Uttarkashi, Uttaranchal

-Location (city/area)- Uttarkashi is 150 kms north of
Rishikesh in the hills of Uttaranchal at 1158 metres.
It is the market town and administrative centre for
the hundreds of villages in the surrounding mountains.
In the yatra (pilgrimage) season May - October, the
town becomes very busy with tens of thousands of
pilgrims passing through each day. During the winter
the town bazaar is still busy but only with locals and
people from the surrounding villages. The town is not
old, having had a serious earthquake in the early
90's. The surrounding hills are covered by protected
pine forests and it is excellent countryside for
taking short walks or longer treks.

Phones: 91-1374-223518 (Reception) and 91-1374-222118
(Admin office)
Fax: 91-1374-222118
email: shivlinga@rediffmail.com

-rates for rooms-
The rate goes down sharply in the offseason when a
normally 800 rupee room is reduced to 300 (double).

-Amenities (hot shower, tv, etc)-
TV, attached bathroom with 24 hour hot water, balcony
with great view of the river and the surrounding
mountains. Food is not generally available in the off
season due to scarcity of customers but breakfast of
omelette, toast and tea is possible!
There is a selection of adequate eating places in the
centre of town about 2kms away.

-Likes/Dislikes-
We think the biggest plus about the Shivlinga is its
situation, 2kms out of town on the road to Gangotri.
It has been built on the family land of the owners and
is managed by Ajay Puri who made us very welcome.
Ajay and some friends are currently working on
planting a large number of trees on the island in the
river just below the hotel. We also found the
surrounding area excellent for birdwatching, including
some species we have not seen elsewhere in India.

The biggest disadvantage was having to plan where to
take our evening meals, whether to walk down into
town, or make do with Maggi noodles at the local
teashop.
