Safe and clean hotel in Kolkata?
Hi my two girlfriends and I are traveling to India (for the first time)for two months to volunteer at the Mother Teresa House. We are on a budget and hoping to stay in some less expensive hotels or hostels. I am wondering if the area around the Mother house is safe or if we should opt for a hotel further away? I believe the area it is in is called Chowringee and I have heard mixed reviews, some say its fine and some say its not safe at all? We want something very safe and clean (we are amateurs 22 year old females) and hopefully somewhat close to the Mother House if possible. Does anyone have any suggestions, maybe whether or not to stay in that area and any suggestions for hotels near by or further away if the area is not safe. Thanks so much!

A lot of volunteers stay in the dorms at the Salvation Army which is on Sudder Street off Chowringhee. I've never felt unsafe there, and it's very inexpensive. I like the Modern Lodge dorms, as well .. just five minutes away.
There are two dozen hotels in that area, and most are pretty cheap; how many vacancies you'll find probably depends on what time of the year you are going to be there. |

er.. it means that mother teresa has done more damage to kolkata's image and public relations than anything else. thanks to her presence kolkata will always be projected as a city of abysmal poverty and will keep attracting the impoverished the way mathura attracts widows and bangkok whores.

I felt the area to be quite safe, although I was only there for a few days. I spent a long time wandering around by myself and had no issues. The most unsafe I felt was when they cleared the steets for the demonstrations against Bush's visit, but that went on without incident.

He would appear to mean that Mathura attracts whores from Bangkok. That's what he says, at least.
Are people in Thailand noticing a shortage? |

Okay so it seems as though some people have got a little off track! Anyways my budget would be around 10 dollars per person a night at the most. I have been looking at the Howrah hotel, centre point guest house and the Broadway hotel. Any good or bad experiences at these places? thanks

Chowringhee is central Kolkata, and is fine. Avoid the little lanes between this and Free School Street, specially at night. Most of them are safe, anyway, one or two are shady because of the activities that go on there.
I would stay close by even if it was slightly more expensive, commuting can be murder in Kolkata. If the Howrah hotel is near Howrah, this is too far. 10 dollars per person does not seem a lot. But 20 dollars a day for a shared room should be well possible. I would land up at a hotel near CHowringhee for a few days and look around. Wonderwomanusa's suggestion may be well workable. |

I like the Broadway. Nice helpful staff. Clean rooms. Plus its out of the tourist area if you like the idea of that.
