please help: Looking for a beach hut in Goa and in Varkala...
Dear all,
I´ll be back in Goa in January after more than 10 years. Back then I have stayed in Colva/Benaulim and I have loved it. I know that Goa has changed dramatically since then, so I kindly ask you to help me to find the right place to stay: I am looking for a beach hut with bathroom on a beach that is neither too quiet nor too busy. Reading the postings in this branch I understand that Palolem is not THE great place to be anymore - in Colva there is too much of a "package tourist athmosphere". I am not sure about Benaulim. If I look at the pictures I took back then I see an empty beach with a few fishing boats on it and three (!) bamboo hut restaurants... I have never been to the North of Goa, so I am open to suggestions in the North too. I´d love to party once in a while, but not all the time... So PLEASE share your experiences and recommendations with me (an email adress or telephone number would be great) - I´d appreciate it very much! Also I will be at Varkala (Kerala) for New Years Eve - I would be glad for recommendations as well! Unfortunately, all known places in Varkala (e.g. kerala bamboo house) told me on the phone that they are full Thanks for your help in advance greetings Birgit |

It's not a beach hut (there aren't any I'm aware of except the Bamboo House) but try Cliff Lounge in Varkala- awesome little place, review & contact details for it on this site under hotel listings |

Hi,
If by the north you mean Arambol, there are beach huts there but they are more grotty than the ones in Palolem and they are not on stilts. Arambol used to be much nicer but since they finished the bridge road to get there it has become a lot more popular and the beach and the freshwater lake are now filthy. I can't recommend Anjuna enough it's a party scene but chilled out too, you are within easy reach of everything, plenty of hotels but beach huts there are not. |

still looking for a place to stay -- urgent!
thank you so much for your replies!
Unfortunately I still havenŽt found a place to stay neither in Goa (Benaulim, Anjuny or similar beaches), in Varkala nor in Mahabalipuram. I keep on receiving "sorry, we are ful, Mam" mails which scares me quite a bit - I am prepared to pay something between 400 and 600 Rp, have emailed and called every contact I could come arcross but unfortunately without success. If you have a phone number of a guest house in the mentioned places for me, so pleaeaeaese let me know! Thanks a lot in advance, best wishes, Birgit |

Birgit, there is no point in trying to email or phone the budget guesthouses in Goa. These places do not have any website or online booking facilities.
When you arrive in Goa, just head to the Maria hall in Benaulim which is the most central part of Benaulim. There you will find a whole bunch of small shops and taxis and you just have to ask these guys whether they know of any place available. There is always accommodation available only thing is you will have to take a look yourself and decide whether the guesthouse suits you or not. Don't be afraid to bargain. Make sure that you are not pressured into accepting something substandard. Personally speaking, Benaulim is a much cleaner beach as comapred to Anjuna. Sernabatim which is between Benaulim and Colva is a lovely secluded nook where you can relax withou anyone bothering you. There are just a couple of small hotels in Sernabatim with Camilsons beach resort being the best of the lot. |

House rentals in Mandrem or Verkala
What about houses for short rentals in either of these places? We had a house in Mandrem last January for around Rs600 per day and that or slightly higher would be great if anyone can help? Never been to Verkala but it seems most accommodation is hotels on cliff top...is this right?
