In Varanasi I stay at Vishnu Rest House on the ghats - less than 10 minutes walk from Main Ghat. About 200 rupees - rooms basic, but great rooftop area with views over the Ganga. Do you have a guide book - cheap places in Calcutta around Sudder Street. |

Thanks Brisso. Yeah I have a guide book, just wanted some personal advice I guess. I'll look into Vishnu Rest House.

I still love staying in the dorms at the Salvation Army in Kolkata; you do meet the most interesting people there!
Last time in India, I stayed at Fairlawn; it was very pricey and I liked it very much, but not everybody does. |

Personally I can't recommend Sudder Street :http://www.telegraphindia.com/107021...ry_7406290.asp I can however suggest The Leela Guest House in Varanasi, and they reply efficiently to emails. http://www.indiamike.com/reviews/sho...uct/444/cat/37 |

two thoughts:
1) please dont live in fear. i dont know how it is where you are from, but i don't think sudder street is more dangerous than a typical big city elsewhere. personally i feel safer there than if i were in an unknown city back home. 2) you didn't mention what your budget range is. |

Thanks everyone. I guess I'm travelling around on a pretty low budget. You know, six months with no income. Some places I may splurge though, depending on my mood and how tired I am. Sometimes I require a little luxury after 30 hour train trips...

Hi Julz,
I travelled from Cochin to Mumbai by train a couple of years ago and loved every 30 hours of it. Sampled lots of home made food from fellow travellers. Nice jems by the way Has anyone stayed at the Super Guest House off Sudder St in Kolkata? An feeback? |
