Place to stay with Air-Con in Delhi in May!
Hi folks,
My girlfriend and I are arriving in Delhi on the 2nd May from the UK and we're a bit nervous about how the heat of the place will hit us. Do you suggest we try to find somewhere to stay with air-conditioning for the first few nights? Can anyone recommend anywhere? We are on a budget, as we are going away for a year. Any help is appreciated, thanks, Alan |

It will be very hot at this time in Delhi.
I could suggest one hotel which has AC Rooms for approx Rs. 1500 = 00 (Bargain hard on rate list for at least 20 - 25 % disc.) Hotel Swati @ Karol Bagh www.swatihotels.com Do try their Gujarati Thali (for Lunch / dinner) if you happen to stay there. YOu will love it. Ronak. |

Thank-you for your reply, that looks very reasonable. The temperature is going to be a big shock to us!
What do you mean about bargaining on hte rate list? I take it you can haggle with the price of the room? May I ask what a luxuary tax is?! Thanks again, Alan PS. I think the website is http://www.hotelswati.com/ |

Yes it will be very hot during May, but not unbearable. AC room & Ac Vehicle would make that a lot cooler.
Luxury tax is like a sales tax imposed by state government. Bargaining means ask for discount on the rate card. Recently my friend wanted to book two rooms for May & he insisted on 25 % discount & they (Swati Hotel) agreed. Only if you ask you will get. Web address mentioned by you is correct. mine was old address. By the way are you going to spend one year in India ? Ronak. |

would make sure also that you pack a couple of sunglasses especially the wrap around kind (the sides of the eyes) for sure (an extra one if you misplace your originals)..and a nice hat.
delhi will be allright at times because its dry heat. if you come south or go east, the high humidity becomes a factor too... condition gently with laying low the initial couple of days and you will be allright ~ |

Yes two pairs of sunnies sounds like a good plan.
Heading north-west to Amritsar where it should be a little cooler (?), but just want to stay round Delhi for a few days and hopefully pop down to Agra for a day or two (how can you not go there!). I think a couple of days in a hotel with air-con will ease us into things. This is all good advice, thanks! |

amritsar is in the plains - no cooler than delhi (not appreciably anyway) in the summer.
http://www.godwinhotels.com/index1.html look them up - they have two class of hotels - i'll be staying there in june (my first time, so have no further info). found them on a thread here. enjoy your stay! |

Hey thanks, that place looks like a good tip, I'll be making a note of it in case I need somewhere else, but have reserved a place in Cottage Yes Please for our arrival.
Yes Amritsar, a bit more research has informed me that it is going to be baking hot there! Still, I've got to see it because it sounds amazing. Looks like we're not going to be anywhere cool until we head for the hills! Thanks for the info! |

Amritsar is amazing - the golden temple of course but do visit the Jalianwalla Bagh as well - pretty haunting/harrowing stuff. And lassis - sweet and creamy - served in huge beakers, just about everywhere. Delicious way to beat the heat. Have fun.
Will be interested to know what you make of Cottage Yes Please. |
