Paharganj area?
Hi,
I need a place to stay in Delhi for 5-7 days. People have told me the Paharganj area is good place to stay because you can easily meet backpackers and it's next to the train station. Anyone else like it there? Any good hotels in that area that are low to mid-range? Thanks ![]() |

Paharganj is a bit of a circus but I love it, it's a kind of mini introduction to India both good and bad. Touts, vendors, street food, beggers it's all on show here as well as natily dressed hippies and backpackers.
Plenty of hotels to suit your needs. Google Star Paradise is a start!! |

I was told to stay away from Paharganj, but that was from a upper-end Indian gentleman. He told me to stick to Connaught Place. Paharganj should be better than Karol Bagh right? That's where I stayed 2 years back.

Moving a bit west ward that is towards Karolbagh you have a good choice of midrange places & now with the Metro in place travelling to CP, New Delhi & old Delhi stations is easy. As CH has said which I agree the first time experience of Pahargunge may be digital, either 1 or 0!

Really Bij CP is completly souless and just as much hassle as Paharganj, in fact more so!!
OK I suppose if you like your India to be Sony, Bennetton and Adidas. It's also a bit of a building site right now. I should check out Karolbagh one time though!! But then I'd miss my nightly Kebab! Bij you're eminent proof of Jyoti's digital theory! |

We love Paharganj, we can afford better places but Paharganj has something magical about it so I would go there every time and stay in Hotel Pallvi Palace or Yuvraj which are part of a chain of the Chand Group and maximum 700rs a night. Yes you get some dodgy looks around there but if you wander around with a big beaming smile and an open mind then you see a bit of real India. Also the main bazaar is a fab place to browse or buy, gotta look up and down and through the back alleys to find the good stuff.
Was in Delhi just 4 weeks ago on business for 3 nights and stayed elsewhere as I needed a quick exit to get to Greater Noida each morning, paid 2000rs per night and hated the place, don't even remember the name of it! Malc

Nothing wrong n PAHARGANJ
Yes- everyone is correct about PAHARGANJ.No doubt this is mini INDIA and you will see whole of the world roaming in this bazzar.
You can find every type of hotel here. If you are looking for something more comfortable and still want to stay in PAHARGANJ...choose AARAKASHAN ROAD hotels. This is walking distance from NEW DELHI RAILWAYS STATION- just walk below the bridge...say 40m aprox and then turn left and you will see some delix hotels here. BUT ! Staying in PHARGANJ is experience of itself...just come with open heart if you are coming from other countries. SOME RECCOMMENDATIONS: Travellers Inn |

We stayed at the Master Paying Guesthouse, which is in a quite suburb about a 30-40r ride from CP. We loved the place and were able to walk around the neighborhood and observe another side of Delhi that corresponded to many of the books that I have read. I have also stayed at Paharganj and would stay there again to save money, as the budget guesthouses are really reasonable. I liked the quieter places on arrival because I am pretty jet-lagged after flying from Canada and need a couple of days to catch up on sleep as I have usually not slept in days before the trip.

I like to use a mid range hotel in Pahargange area called Hotel Prince Polonia it is very clean & quiet as it is just off main bazzar yet still central to all the hustle & bustle of this area.
I've stayed there 4 times in the last 2 yrs & have booked it again for this Dec, they charge RS1100 inc tax & they arrange airport pickups which i would advise you to use if this is your first time in Delhi their web address is www.hotelprincepolonia.com you can email them at polinter@vsnl.com when do you land in Delhi? i land on 19th Dec. I love the bustling atmosphere of Pahargang. Theres plenty of other travelers you can meet, and many restaurants selling all kinds of food. Lots of travelers food(muesli, pasta, smoothies,et c.). And lots of cheap hotels. Though next time I'm there, might try someplace different, just for a different experience. But I love it there. The street kebabs at night
. Eating cheap street omelets. Connaught is pretty sterile IMHO. If you want a more easy stay, stay in Connaught Circle or some other parts. I personally have never had any problems in Pahargang, though it's been almost 9 years since I was last there. Things could be different now.![]() |

ok . . . looks like I have Karolbagh "all to myself" (plus a bazillion bargain hunters from South Delhi)
Cy, I actually tried PG last time or so I was in Delhi, just didn't float my boat, lolol, so it's your turn to try KB anf the Kebabs there are just fine!one glitch in KB is every time I stay there the rates have shot up another 20%, so the haggling starts anew! I may be there in late Nov, maybe I should try internet haggling at my usual haunt . . . Truth be told, now that I've been in the NGO world for some years, usually, if on assignment, then I'm at a paying guest house, or at a friend of a friend's place. working in India India is a whole different world that traveling in India India. what's J's digital theory? |

At the end of our trip, we stayed in Paharganj and it was a hoot. All of India rolled into a few blocks. Stroll along at night past the fires and the foodstalls. Pat a wandering cow or goat.
Stayed at the Hotel Ajanta on one of the top floors and we had a great view of the entire street. Across the back alley was a nest with a pair of eagles. They would fly around, land and glare down at the pedestrians. Beautiful birds. I would stay away from CP unless you're looking for a bit of the West. It's not a bad place but too much like a High Street. Trendy shops, Western goods and coffee shops. Nice place to visit but we get the same experience in any European or North American city. |
