Hmm. I wish I could recommend a place but the place I stayed at was a dump. The tea plantations are worth a visit though and the Bollywood tour was entertaining... just don't expect a lot for your 100 Rs.

Watch out for when you are going.

Mrs N and I went a couple of weeks ago. It was wet and cold.

The rain we expected, we did not expect the temperatures to be so low. maybe it would be less of a shock coming from Bangalore tha it was coming from Chennai...

Half-way up the mountain (eg Coonor) the climate is much nicer.

If you can afford a bit more then check out the Regency Villas it's a real back to the Raj era type place with giant rooms full of antiques & real fires, it's set in its own grounds in a nice peaceful area 5mins out of the main town. We loved it! KK

Ooty is absolutely lovely. I don't know about rain and all..what Nick is mentioning, I've been there last August and the weather was very pleasant, so...depends.

We stayed at some hotel..Monarch or smth...up on a small hill. A bit of a dusty room...too many flies in it also. But all in all the hotel is on the decent side..so maybe it was just that the room wasnt cleaned properly. It's a big hotel...belongs to some movie star. I don't remember the rate exactly but it must have been around your budget.

I think I stayed here....is this the place with the bald waiter???

Only cost us 350 for a double, but that was early February (low season). Nice place though, highly recommended.

I could recommend that you do not stay at Sterling Resorts --- but it would be out of your budget anyway.

I think the weather turns "pleasant" again around September.

But for me, any climate requiring heating is a no no . Had my fill of that in 50 years of UK!

Ooty

I stayed for three nights at King's Cliff and would recommend it. http://www.kingscliff-ooty.com/

Off-season, deluxe room is Rs1500, so perhaps more than you want to spend.

The location is great, views are splendid, and atmosphere and food were great. The rooms themselves could use a freshen-up, but they didn't offend me.

You may be able to talk them down on the rates because the second season doesn't start until September.

By the way, anyone have a latest weather report from Ooty? Thinking of heading there next week. Nick, how cold is cold?

I certainly am not!

"Cold" is huddling in front of an electric fire shiverring.

I think it was 12 in the night, maybe a few degrees hgher in the day.

Don't remember the bald waiter, but it was a while ago, feb '99 when i stayed there, but what i do remember is the best "fingerchips" i've had in India (proper British chips) DROOL! Anyway it's the hotel that's in the same grounds as what use to be the summer palace of the Maharaja of Mysore. KK
