No hotel reservation - midnight in Delhi?

I thought not to reserve any hotel anywhere during my six weeks journey in India in next October - November. Just to keep my freedom! All I am worried about is my first night in Delhi. I'll arrive midnight by plain. Should I be worried about my lodging?
I will be travelling on a mini budget, never expect to pay over $5 a night.

Just book for the first night!

Hi Sindy welcome to the forum!

For a first timer I would recommend booking a Hotel and you might want to arrange to be picked up at the airport by the Hotel.
This is a nice way to arrive, you will be tired and disorientated when you arrive and this takes all the stress out of arrival!
Someone from the Hotel will be there to greet you, clutching a board with your name on it and your bed will be waiting for you.

I always use the Star Paradise/Palace, they charge 400 RPS for the airport pick-up and their rooms start at 200 for a single with attached bathroom.

There are other Hotel options take a look at the Indiamike Hotel listings or click hereDelhi Hotel Listings

There are of course other ways to do this but this is a nice hassle free way to arrive!!!

Happy Traveling!!

Nothing to really worry about. I myself would sort something out for the first night then do whatever you want over the next few weeks.

When you get off the plane you are usually tired plus it is late. I would not want to be roaming Delhi late at night paying more than $5.00 (if that was my budget) in taxi or rickshaw fares looking for a room.

If you can get yourself to Pahar Ganj you will find a place no problem Just try some of the bigger ones most have someone (usually asleep) on reception so ring hard and make a noise and be persistant.

Try and hook up with other travellers on the plane and life will be more comfortable.

You can take the veterans bus from the airport to close to PG and there are always rickshaw wallahs waiting around.

If you don't fancy that book somewhere and take a taxi from the prepay rank.

When you walk out of the arrivals take a moment to take a deep breath and remember the smell you'll never be aware of it again...It ius quite distinctive and when you return you'll instantly recognise it ...Its not a bad smell just a very unique aroma

Enjoy

$5/day in the big cities is difficult; you might want to go over that budget and get a bit more realistic... unless you want to sleep in the dorms at Ringo's (about Rs90/$2).

The Ex-Servicemen's bus from Delhi airport is very cheap and will take you to Connaught Place -- but the first bus may not run until 5am or a bit later than that. If price is an object, then get your ticket and wait for the bus, otherwise, you'll again need to review your budget.

Getting into India upon first arrival can be difficult, and we don't want you to hate the country and long to go home, so treat yourself gently and spend a bit more on those initial couple of days.
