New Delhi bike trip
My wife and I are arriving in Delhi in early November with our bikes. We plan to cycle/bus/train to either Calcutta or Mumbai, then fly home. We have about 3 weeks. Any ideas on which route would be better, Mumbai or Calcutta. From my review of maps, seems pretty flat to both, so no problem with hills etc. What about prevailing wind?? I would also like a hotel recommendation in Delhi. Something fairly comfortable, downtown and under $40.00 US would be nice. Thx.

Mumbai trip would be worth while as you can travel through Rajasthan one of the most beautiful Indian states, you might be in time for the Pushkar deserst festival also , which fall around nov12 this year.
also I think the roads are safer through rajasthan and Gujrat syates rather than through UP and Bihar , driving wize and otherwise(looters/etc) . but be careful anyways as indian highways are killer and cyclists don't get any priority you can plan a trip through the less busy roads though . do pass through Kutch/Bhuj in Gujrat good luck |

There's a few bike threads here, I tried to search for you but there's actually too many - but have a look, people offered great insight on the last thread I read. I can only mention towns around MP, I have no idea what it would be like to bike -- I've biked alot other places and you don't really think about winds when you travel by bus, but they are impt.
We biked about a bit in India within towns. Mostly I would be tempted to pull far off the road the minute I saw a vehicle coming in either direction. Now, after that dearth of info.....do please write to tell us what the route will by and how it is . |

I have a friend who is a guide in India. Rajasthan is a good place to visit. I have done it during my first visit in India. Now I move around on a motorcycle. Though have not much done on cycles. Delhi to Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan is 235 kms. Slightly hilly in small stretches. Mostly flat. Jaipur to Jodhpur is quite flat. Bikaner-Jaisalmer-Jodhpur, all flat, beautiful desert, friendly people, good tourism infrastructure in these cities, relatively speaking compared to the rest of the country. Then you can go down to Udaipur, in the south of Rajasthan, hilly tracks there, but a very romantic city, with lakes and colourful bazars. If you need more info, just ask... willing to help.

If you're planning on cycling to Mumbai or Calcutta I take my hat off to you,,,,,,,,, I noticed that you're both 50+ so thats quite a feat you're taking on, Have you experienced the Indian roads before? For me there would be far too many obstacles to negotiate along the roadside, sleeping dogs, potholes, people and thats apart from the crazy drivers, still, once you've picked up an entourage, and you surely will everyone will see you coming,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ![]() |
