Mumbai PG Accomodations - how should i do this?

Hey guys,

I will be returning to india for my second long term stay, this time as a DJ (deep house), a cricketer, and a researcher (will be putting together a blog/photojorunal portraying perspectives on cricket in India across different people).

I am initially going to settle down in Mumbai for 6-8 weeks (at least, could turn into months...), and am looking to get a PG accomodation. I ahve never been to the city. I am looking to spend 10000-15000 INR a month for a place.I have contacted several PG agents but am really unsure of how to go about this. Does anyone have an recommendations for agents, neighborhoods, etc.? Does anyone know of someone who might be willing to put up a short term roomate?

-chris

Question Do it from Mumbai

These things are difficult. Agents keep changing. Better to do it when you are physically in Mumbai. It may take four or five days, but still you will get a place which you have physically seen.

Which area do you wish to take PG acco? 15,000 will not go a long way in South Mumbai.

i was hoping to shack up in the western burbs, as this is what i am told is where most of hte nightlife is going on (which will be good for my job).

I think I may have already lined something up though...

I agree with AvidTrekker. Get your PG accomodations sorted out once you're there. There's a free referral service across New Marine Lines road from Churchgate station, down a passage directly north of the old historic railway HQ building, up a flight of stairs. It's the tourist office, although I doubt they get many tourists. Otherwise just look in mid-day and you'll find plenty of classified ads. It's easy.

Bandra is HOT for your purpose. Lots of hip people, models and expats people the zone. Which also means; alaaaaas; that your 15k per month won't fetch you an independant pad. Budget at least 25k & you'll get somewhere.

On the other hand, Mahim is slightly off this circuit, within 30 mins of cabbing from Bandra & possible for 15 to 18k per month.

I did something like this recently, staying in bandra for three months. Great location with lots of bars and clubs. PGs generally suck (no privacy), but you could do. Through a broker, my girlfriend and I found a huge flat one block off of Carter Road. Rent was 20K rupees. To find the agent (who is a dick, but useful), go to Pali Naka and ask the shopkeepers for, I believe, Amit. He's located up the hill (200 ft) from the banks, across the street from the film institute (or some producer association). His office is tucked back behind apartment buildings, right next to a tailor named Yousef.
