Mumbai-Best Area to stay

Hi

I have been reviewing the hotel listings and other threads and I am still confused as to where the best place to stay in Mumbai is...

I will be arriving late at night..alone... and will only be staying for a 2-3 nights before getting on a train to Nasik.

What area is centeral to rail stations and general shopping.. I will need to stock up on few things before I depart Mumbai and enjoy walking around (is this possible?!)

Any suggestions will be helpful as well as specific hotel recomendations!

Thank you all this site is awesome and I have learned some valuable things from your posts!

Hope (and know) you all can help!

normally tourists prefer coloba area, but if you are arriving late at night, it wud be a long distance from the airport till there,

your train from nasik i guess will depart from Victiria Terminus or CST , which is close to colaba.

areas around andheri/santacruz/bandra (close to airports ) are relatively good to shop around and good to stay (ofocurse if it rains heavy they get flooded fast)

don't know of any specific hotels though, nor would have any idea how wud it work with stocking of your belongings but if u know someone in the city , some acquantaince or a friends friend, then u can always take a favor.

wish u a plesant stay and don't bring any rains with you.

Thank you for your responce....how long is a taxi from from the airport to the Colaba area...2 hours?

would it be worth it to get a closer hotel to the airport and then move further into the city in the morning? Other good areas around the airport?

it just seems like a lot of moving around...suggestions?

it seems like if I have to get into the city center to get on the train I may as well do it at night...right? I really have no idea and I am already nervous about being alone....what to do?

Hi Pele_light,

Have been many times in Bombay and tried several hotels. Have a look in Residency Hotel in Indiamike Hotel Directory, the Steven_ber entrance, you will find there a lot of pictres of the hotel. Last two timen stayed in Residence Hotel and must reccommend it. A very good relation between price/quality, probably the best in Bombay. Nice restaurants not far from the hotel.

On the other hand, the hotel is at 200 or 300 metres from CST (Victoria Station). Please do not stay near the airport as you 'll save only 15/20 minutes, and then again moving to another hotel next morning.

Jorge

hi pele_light,

i agree with jorge. would also recomend staying near CST, its not far from colaba, you can even walk if you like. the taxi from the airport will take about 1 to 1 and a half hour at nighttime depending on the driver and the route he`s taking.
if the residency is full i`d sugest the welcome hotel in the same area, also about 200-300m from CST.
welcome hotel
257 bhahid bhagad singh road
mumbai 400 001
tel.:91-22-5631-4488
fax:91-22-5631-4489
email:welcome_hotel@vsnl.com

tell the taxi driver you want to go to victoria station or to the GPO(it`s next to the station and the hotels). sometimes they don`t know the term CST but every taxi driver i met knew the GPO.

have fun

martin

normally it shouldn't be a problem traveling with taxi from the airport to colaba in the middle of the night, the taxis are registered with the authorities, but just be a little more cautious.

The other option to hotels is Hospitality exchange where you stay with locals .but this needs to be done in advance so the host can accomodate you .
