month by the sea

I am looking for a hotel/B&B/homestay anything! as long as it is clean and not far from the sea anywhere in the south for a month stay from mid december.
Has anyone got any recommendations or areas they have stayed that they can tell me about. I don't want a touristy place but then again not so quiet I never see anyone

So around 570 rupees a day, which means your going to need a cheap room, I suggest Gokarne, Agonda, Colomb The beaches in Maharastra are better and quieter but cheap rooms are not as common in the Redi/Vengurla/Tarkarli/Malvan area.
Needless to say a room on the beach probably won't happen within this budget look for rooms in family homes back from the beach, prices can be as little as 100 rupees but these days 200 is probably nearer the mark, you won't get an attached bathroom in this price range.

Cheap accomodation and food is more readily available in Gokarne and Agonda.
If a sandy beach isn't a big deal or you, don't mind a 10 minute stroll to one, then Cabo De Rama, or better still colomb are good choices.

With this budget you'll need to figure out the local eateries as well, Doris in Agonda still does a rather nice fish, curry rice for 45 rupees, a bit more expensive than a few years ago but still delicious.

In Chaudi, the nearby town (near to Colomb, Agonda is 8 kms away) there are a few places that serve vegetarian Thalis (set meals) for 30 Rp and fish curry rice, a decent bakers, and a good little supermarket.
In the evening there are also street astalls selling Samosas, pakora and Bhal Puri
Patnem and Palolem both very close to Colomb have paw bhaji places for breakfast, in Palolem you have several options the easiest one to find would be Krishnas place, at the top of the beach road near the bus stop.
In Patnem same again Asween serves up great bhaji (soupy spicy pea and coconut concotion)with a bread roll and teacosts around 10 rupees with the tea, on the way to Palolem from Colomb there are various little street places that do noodles, omellettes samosas, you'll find them on the road just back from the beach on the tarmac road, south side.
Various places in Palolem do fish curry rice and basic vegetarian dishes for around 25 rupees, very tasty and filling.
If you have a bicycle there are good places along the NH17 road to Margao, that serve up basic Goan food.
The Mangalore Hotel does great South Indian and North at very affordable prices.
Further along the road you have a few places selling chicken and fish dishes not many tourists eat here but the food is good, the Annapurna being the place where the locals gather.

In Agonda, Gokarne and Colomb hiring a scooter for the day is a great way to see the beautiful coastline and the mountains of the Western Ghats available for 150-200 depending on you skills at bargaining.

The following place has been recommended by some indiamikers, it's very close to one of the lakes in Alleppey, Kerala, so it should also be reasonable close to the sea, the place looks nice and I'll try the place myself soon.

If you're staying for a month you may be able to negotiate a discount, although because it's December, the place may be fully booked.
