lodging in rishikesh

Is there anybody who could give me some advice about a place to stay in Rishikesh? I was there once for a few days years ago and at Swarg Ashram I only remember ugly concrete buildings with dark and clumsy rooms.
I've been told that Lakshman Jhula is better... I'd love to get information about some budget place with a garden, a balcony, a little privacy.... and a window in the room.... asking too much... ?
Thanks everybody :-))

There is a Hotel Ganga Darshan about two kms. before the main bus stand. (as you drive down from Haridwar/Delhi you dont have to go all the way to the Rishikesh Bus stand) The bus/taxi driver would know. You can watch WILD elephants bathing in the Ganga river on the opposite bank if your lucky. Volga_Volga stayed there last (month)?? Send her a PM to ask her the details about price, level-of-comfort etc. She's a kind soul. She will send you a reply if she reads this also. The room with a view is only one or two rooms. Ask for seeing the room before you pay any advance cash. I stayed there many years ago.... my info is not up-to-date.

Actually I stayed in Swarg Ashram area (what's wrong with it?) and I posted my hotel in the hotel section... I still think Swarg Ashram was peaceful and more pleasant place to stay, as location, than Laxman Jhula (noisy?).

AT, I have landed in India the night before and simply did not have strength to explore the hotels around Rishikesh the following morning! Just went for the first thing that came up. plus I was there in April and you said the season would not start till end-May

but here is link to thread with the AT's earlier posting about his elephant watching

i stayed in hotel divya in laxman jhula, up the hill a little bit, a room w/ balcony and view of the ganges cost 200 Rs... but it is a bit noisy as ashrams are chanting and singing bhajans sometimes... private bath and hot water shower too. i got a room on the backside for 150 Rs - no balcony tho but much quieter. ganga is name of the manager, I believe his email address is divyanew@yahoo.com
