Hi Mikers,
I just added Tiruvannamalai and the Ashram of Ramana Marharshi to my trip. I'm asking for suggestions about:

1. Lodging suggestions for Rs1000 or less? Water, bath, secure, quiet, some comfort desired.

2. Any advice to a first timer India traveler about staying in Tiruvannamalai?

Thanks in Advance,
Jeff

Right now you can't get a room in Tiru. I've tried for friends visiting. Almost impossible. It's high season now plus Mooji, a very popular guru is here with his entourage.

Things should open up soon, after the next full moon coming. Suggest you try below Tasty cafe, theres a nice guesthouse there and rooms, not in high season, should run about 300 or 400. There are many other guest houses but as I said, right now it is tough to find one. Having said that, you will find one sooner or later. Probably later.

Thanks Ken,
I should have put dates of my visit: 10 February for 4-6 days. This is first phase of moon, if that matters. Are you there now?

Yes I'm here in Tiru now. If you are coming Mid feb you won't have a problem getting a room. But always at the night of the full moon it gets busy here. They walk around the holy mountain by the hundred of thousands. Enlightenment is then guaranteed. At least that's the promise.

Jeff, I'm in Tiru now, and having just checked out of the ashram, trying to find a room. Not much available. Mooji leaves today, so hopefully his followers will as well. Tasty cafe is full. (am there now in the cafe part). 100R will not get you anything but a scuzhole. fyi.
take it easy

An example of what kind of superstitions survive even until today. At least people get enlightened by the moon.

When the Buddha was once told that a bath in the Ganga was purifying from past karma, he simply said, that if that was so then all the fish and other aquatics swimming there would have long been liberated.
