Likewise. They ask for my ID, but not my wife's. Mid to mid-plus budget, and within last couple of years. I visited my friend in India Dec 10 - Jan 6, 2012. I am white American, my male "friend" is Indian. We are both 43.
The one or two-star hotel in Mumbai wanted to see both of our ids & was very particular, wanting to know the city where I got my visa as it was blurry on my visa. The hotel in Delhi also wanted to see id from both of us. The hotel in Agra only wanted to see his id. The hotel in Goa wanted id from both of us. The doctor I saw in Goa asked if we were married as we were leaving his office. The hospital never asked. The doctor I went to see in Mumbai never asked. His cousin let us stay in her flat in Mumbai & her bungalow in Pune & never asked for id from either of us, lol!

Is it allowed for unmarried couple to stay in hotel in Mumbai ??..
No pun or sarcasm, but if we can use 4 (FOUR) pages on this discussion coming out from a 20 years old guy (instead of asking how to reach Nubra valley driving from Mumbai!)then i guess http://www.indiamike.com is walking the same path as couple of other "travel information" website which went kaput...
I am not against the question or morality or blah blah (on the contrary actually) but there are so many various platform and website which has/will answer the question. Why on Indiamike ? No moderator to close even !?!
My unsolicited suggestion gentlemen, lets keep this raw travel & info sharing site with relevance. Now, if someone or some people thinks these type of questions has relevancy here, we are not far away when some people start asking/quoting the telephone number of escort services as well !
I hope i haven't offended anyone.
