We are arriving in Bombay late at night (in April) and then plan to travel by bus to Mahabalashwar hill station for a couple of days proir to travelling on to Goa by train. Can someone tell us:
1) Where we can pick up the Konkan railway without returning to Bombay and also which bus do we get to that place from Mahabalashwar? 2) We plan to stay at the Mahabalashawar Club - has anyone stayed there, if so any reports? 3) Not been to Goa before - fancy somewhere quiet but with reasonable accomodation, not a hut with a mattress on the floor. Any suggestions? 4) Finally - is the rail journey scenic enough to warrent doing it by day - we usually get a sleeper for long trips to save a day. Answers to any or all these questions would be very welcome! Thanks. |

i'm no expert but since no one else has answered...
if you want to travel on the konkan railway you will have to get to bombay, the day train leaves early in the morning and that would be very inconvenient i think your best bet would be to go by road to pune. it's a shorter drive (about two and a half hours) and is the closest major rail junction to mahabaleshwar from pune there's one train at around five o clock which reaches goa (vasco da gama) at 7.30 the next morning and another (the poorna express) which leaves at about 11 at night and reaches madgaon, goa at about one pm the next day. the second will allow you to see a bit of the view, and arrive at a decent hour to go hunting for accommodation. (madgaon is near colva, benaulim and varca) you should be able to get a 'reasonable' place to stay in goa at whichever place you do decide on the rail journey is fairly scenic but long, not worth losing a day over. of course it also depends on what sort of train traveller you are. it's fairly hard to sleep at night (lots of stops, loud voices etc)so if you're the kind that will be up half the night, it's better to travel by day ~ as for the mahabaleshwar club, never been to it but it should be top notch old chap and all that sort of thing! hope this helps |
