Presently I am paying 750 rupees to stay at YHA Delhi - trying it out but I'm not sure whether the bathroom is attached or not. Will see in a couple of days. there are good suggestions in a thread for Delhi too re budget accommodation there.

750rp in YHA? can you give details of that pls. phone no or so.

it must be a dorm bed.

If you can get an Indian, say a driver or a home stay owner, to book for you, you may save lots. At least it has for us plus this has got us rooms when "none" were available.

No it is a single room - but I'm not sure whether attached bathroom. Arriving tomorrow morning, presently on the train! -Anubisgrau. It is in Diplomatic Enclave, Chanakyapuri - there are phone nos. but I never got an answer. I booked online, through YHA - New Delhi google. They have a website. Will post tomorrow how it is.

The building itself is quite institutional but clean enough. I have a room with two beds in it for myself and an attached bathroom with warm not really hot water. The room, bedsheets etc. is very clean but the bathroom could do with a bit of 'elbow-grease' to bring it up to shiny white. I am not finding it too bad however and I would stay here again. I can see why they don't answer the phones - not enough people on the reception. Breakfast is included in your 750 rupees (if you are not a member you pay an extra 50 rupees per night but you could become a member so if you are staying more than one night an annual membership is 100 rupees but you would require a passport photo)The breakfast isn't much - tea or coffee, 4 slices of bread you toast yourself, 1 pat of butter and 1 small jam packet. Around the corner is a shopping centre with a couple of restaurants if you wanted to get more! It's in a quiet area, easily accessible from airport or railway station - get a taxi from airport - autorickshaw from railway. You could take Metro to Secretariat then auto from there if you wanted. I did this from Old Delhi station.

It seems our affronted OP is not alone....

The shortfall in tourist accommodation in the country is estimated to be 1,50,000 rooms by 2010. Out of this, 1,00,000 rooms are required in the budget category. To fill the gap between demand and supply, the State Governments were advised to create land banks and adopt friendly land and taxation policies. Creation of Budget accommodation has to be a priority. As a way forward, the State Governments were advised to allot land on priority at preferential terms for budget hotels. Adoption of single window clearance system by the State Governments was also suggested as an effective measure to expedite clearance of hotel projects in the States. Incredible India Bed & Breakfast scheme has been successfully implemented in Delhi. Other States and UTs were advised to replicate this scheme to tackle the shortage of hotel rooms in the country.

That's annoying - I booked mine within India - can't imagine why it isn't opening though. Will speak to man at the counter this morning. Tele nos. are 011 -26110250 and 011 26871969 and if you rang in the afternoon here you might get through. I rang in morning and now realize they are flat out with check in and out at that time. The shower this morning was lukewarm - just doable and no more. There is a heater in the room though which is pretty good for this price room rate. Also air conditioning for hot times.

About 10 - 15 mins. by rickshaw to Metro. Also taxis are standing not far away as well and they are not charging exorbitant rates. I asked at counter re website and the fellow there says it does occasionally play up - technician in tomorrow - he suggests you try a bit later in the week. YMCA is better located, closer to Connaught Place but the rates are double to this one here. There is also YMCA Blue Triangle Family Hostel, rates slightly cheaper than one nearer CP and that is also a little closer to CP.

Personally I wouldn't stay in a Western style 5 star in India if someone else was paying.......I like the people more that I meet at the cheapies. Though I must admit that some of the converted Palaces ect look interesting.

It's location,location,location for me,although a personal bathroom is nice.

Stayed in a dozen or so places 1n 2006 ranging from rp250 to rp1500 and they all passed muster. One in a old Havali in Bundi for rp800 single was as good a room as I've had anywhere. If you put a few white tiles and new fittings in the bathroom it would rent for 10 times that amount in OZ.

I agree with you Leith - family guesthouses, smaller hotels are usually much nicer with friendly, genuine personal contact with owners and their helpers. But these are difficult to find in the Metros. On the Delhi budget thread there is a list of family guesthouses. I haven't stayed at any. Master Guest House is far too expensive for me (this is in LP recommended family guesthouse - it is very nice and lovely folk who run it but I just can't afford their prices). On that thread there are many cheaper. I have gone from Karol Bagh to Likir House and now to YHA as prices have been increasing. Likir House for OP is now 1200 rupees with air conditioning for a single. It is very good - spotlessly clean.PM me for details for email and phone no. They do not want their details widely spread over internet because very particular re guests (no larrikins allowed! no drinking alcohol either). However is out in South Delhi in Lajpat Nagar and not central to CP.
