Hotels near Kalka ?
I am planning to get a train to Shimla. I would prefer to get one of the early morning ones (5:30am). Only problem is that, I will have to be dropped off in Kalka the day before. Are there any hotels close or in Kalka where I could stay till the morning ?
I know about the Shiwalik hotel in Parwanoo but is it easy to walk to Kalka station from there early in the morning or would I be able to get a taxi at 5am ? |

Kalka station has one (or more) Retiring Rooms (I don't know the total number) Why not stay there - its very convenient for the morning train...

Kalka Hotels
Hi
Parwanoo is a good 3-4 Km from kalka station. You can stay at hotels on the main station road in Kalka and walk to the station in about 10 mins. Was there in end may on the way back from shimla. Stayed at the Blue moon Hotel Not much but decent with okay bathrooms, TV and air cooled and AC rooms. Just a bit of advice get a hotel as soon as you hit Kalka as they get filled quickly. For a meal I can recommend the Krishna Cafe good food. Best of Luck. Mani |

hi shere
U better stay in the retiring room at the station. Its ok for a short stay. And staying there will be a new experience too.Its pretty big with a nominal rent of Rs.100. There r two trains that head towards shimla.Be sure that u board the one that is spacious(i guess himalayan queen). The other one is pretty uncomfartable. ![]() |

Thanks.
Is fist class on the 6:00am Simla Express that bad ? The only reason I do not want to go on the Himalayan Queen is because it will mean wasting nearly a day in Kalka. I will be dropped off in Kalka at around 1pm so will have to wait for the next days train (if the timetable on the IRCTC site is correct). The other alternative would be to reach Kalka a bit earlier and get the 12:10 Himalayan Queen on the same day which would mean no time wasted in Kalka. Thinking about it this appears to be the more attractive option and I am going to try and arrange my transport upto Kalka so I am there in time for the 12:10 train. |

Hey, I dunno but I think the Himalyan Queen runs between Delhi and Kalka and not Kalka and Simla unless the Kalka - Simla train too has the same name !!! And if does leave from Kalka at 12.10 pm and u heading to Kalka from Delhi then all you have to do is catch the Himalayan Queen from Delhi to Kalka as it will get u there by 12 !! Or else to be on the safer side you take the SHatabdi from Delhi to Kalka as that reaches by 11.40am and runs on time whereas the Delhi - Kalka Himalayan Queen can run late at times .

Hi !
If you can get to Kalka before this train leaves then do it. Kalka is just a junction town and there is nothing to do. so go for the Kalka shimla train. Well since these trains are the only way for most of the people to travel between the hills and the plains they get filled along the way and first or second class does not matter. We crossed these deluxe trains on our way back from shimla and they seemed okay. Though there are no luggage racks and you have to store your luggage under the seat or on the aisle. Best of luck Mani |

Hi everybody!
Can anybody tell me, if Hwh Kalka mail reaches little late at Kalka, does the Shivalik express waits for it to arrive? The website says Shivalik express is a connecting train. I am planning to book tickets for shivalik express. But then I am afraid, it will be a mess if Howrah kalka mail reaches late! |

Does both Shivalik express and the Himayayan Queen take the same route.I am planning from Delhi.I plan to board 10:30 PM train to Kalka. It reaches Kalka the next day morning at 4.55 AM.The Shivalik express is starting from 5.30 AM. I do not want to miss the fun of travelling in the train to Shimla, but is the fun the same with Shivalik express and Himalayan Queen. With Himalayan Queen..I will be wasting almost a day.Isn't Himalayan Queen much slower (is it because due to lot of stops)? Guys, some thoughts pls. |

There seems to be some confusion. The Shivalik Express runs from Kalka to Shimla whereas Himalayan Queen runs from Hazrat Nizamuddin to Kalka.

Since it is a connecting train it will wait till Kalka Mail arrives. Unless the train from Kolkata is very very late this train mostly reaches on time.
If you are starting from Delhi the Kalaka Mail is a good option and you don't waste much time. During summer season Kalka mail is booked very well in advance so getting a reservation may be difficult. |

From Delhi to Shimla should I catch a night train (10.30 PM) which will reach Kalka the next morning 4.30, so that I can catch the Shivalik express to Shimla.By this, I save some time by night journey.
But, people say that this train is little crappy, meaning there won't be much space to put your luggages etc as compared to the Himalayan Queen (this is a day train starting from Delhi at 6.20 AM)so people say that I shouldn't miss this Himlayan Queen. If its the same route then why do people still insist on Himalayan Queen. When I checked in IRCTC i find that there are no stops for Shivalik express, whereas there are many stops for the Himalayan Queen, hence I am not able to confirm if it goes thru the same route. I am now confused. Please , any suggestions? |

There is only one train line from kalka to Shimla, so only one route.
