armoury, The Oberoi, Mumbai - wow! The Oberoi and the Taj are the two best and most expensive hotels in Mumbai. Obviously, they are very good. In fact they are probably more expensive than equivalent hotels in US and UK. The Oberoi is located in the business district (Nariman Point) of Mumbai and is overlooking the Marine Drive and the Arabian Sea. You get a good view and the Marine Drive is good for walks early morning or late evening (though crowded in the evenings and with hawkers).
The Oberoi is a regular hangout for Western travelers, so you will feel at home. It is close to movie theatres, museums etc - well, all I can say is you would be living in style in the Oberoi. Good luck. No idea about the other two hotels, but Leela, Taj and Oberoi are all big hotel chains in India and you wont have too many problems staying in any of their hotels. |

One other thing - the Oberoi in Mumbai has two buildings, both very close to each other on the same street and part of the same chain. Just make sure you get into the right one.

Hey Layman - wasn't aware of your reply posts here or else I would have replied sooner. Thanks for your account on the big leaguers. Actually, the rates are comparable.
Can I bug you for one more? The JW Marriott....would you say it's in the same league as the Oberoi and Taj? I know it's located on Juhu and close to the airport. I'm in two minds whether or not to stay nearer to the airport or further away and battle the crush of traffic getting back to the airport. It's a two-day stay in Mumbai. and not interested in sightseeing and visiting museums and all that. Thanks for the tip on the two Oberois. armoury |

Bentley`s is pretty ok
Just thought I`d recommend the Bentley's hotel in Colaba, Mumbai. I think it cost around 1.200 rps for a double/attached bath/cable TV with breakfast. They have cheaper rooms as well. I`d rather save on hotel sleeping costs and use the extra cash to go dine in 5 star style 8like the Taj- great Curry Pasta!!), use there bathrooms and splurge a little- after all when your sleeping, you might as well be in a budget hotel...

Thanks archits, thanks Watson...I've heard/read good things on Bentley's, but thought we would wind down from a hot/sticky dirty (that's road dirt) 2 months of traveling in Lux hotel - a nice treat. Not going to be sightseeing.
Now if only I could scrape up enough paisas for a plate of curry pasta...yummm. Happy travels. armoury |
