I'm planning a first time independent trip to Kerala and Mysore areas, travelling alone so feel I want to book accommodation in advance via internet if pos. I emailed a place which several different websites had quoted a room rate from 600Rupees. They replied that this rate is only for Indian tourists and that as a foreigner I must pay a much MUCH higher rate .....which puts it out of my budget. Is there some kind of new regulation charging foreigners different rates?!!
Or is this place just trying to take me for a ride? I've spent today looking at different websites and just Rupee rates seem to be quoted for all the places Ive looked at.Should I begin haggling via email with this place? I'm planning to stay in Cochin, both in the city and later on Cherai Beach, also Kannur and Mysore. Late January to mid February. I want something comfortable and quiet with own bathroom etc ........I was hoping I could do this for 600 - 750R per night or so. Any tips on where this is possible ? |

No, it's not new: Rupee rate for Indians, Dollar rate for foreigners.
Surprised to hear of Rs600-a-night place having two rates, though, unless they are giving huge discount to Indians!

Hi Yildiz, and welcome to Indiamike.com. I've been to your hometown a few times in recent years.
You should have no problems finding a reasonable room with attached bathroom for the price you are prepared to pay. In my experience there is not much overcharging of foreigners in India, quite like Turkey really, or if there is I haven't noticed it. You could always try bargaining on the price if you think it's too high, or just look around for places to stay when you arrive.

It's probably cheaper to book a room in person than over the internet. India has plenty of hotel rooms. You won't have trouble finding space in late Jan/early Feb, and if you are staying toward the low end of the market you will want to inspect your room and the bathroom before you commit. Trust me on this.
