Lightbulb Hotel in Dharamsala?

I am looking for a real nice place in Dharamsala. I have never been there before. Any tips? Good experiences? Thanks! Mirjam

Go up to McLeod Ganj
Dharamsala is just the staging post
There are many hotels there

If you plan on staying for a while make your way to Bagsu or Dharamkot where you will find a family stay

It gets pretty busy from now till monsoon
Just take a room in McLeod for the night and then search the next day
Hotel Tibet is reasonable if I remember right as the Green House ...I think thats what it's called

Hope that helps

Hotel Tibet is actually costly and you can get a great room at Om Hotel, which there is a "secret path to" ..right when you arrive in Upper Dharamsala (McLeod Gang) in the centre look for where the bikes and taxi's park and you will see a store with sweets. .there is a pth there with a sign that you follow that will bring you right to Om. Ask anyone, they can help u find it. Very cheap and the best sunset and sunrise views in the area. Highly reccomended. Yes to Western toilets, hot water showers whenever you want them, double size bed, nice and efficient laundry service, great food, nice family.....

Hotel Dhauladhar or Hotel Kashmir House at Dharamsala are good options. At Mcleodganj you have Hotel Bhagsu. All three are run by Himachal Tourism and fall in the category of deluxe hotels.

I highly recommend the View Cafe in Bagsu (its at the top of the road up the hill, o nthe right hand side). It's a nice relaxed place run by a friendly family, with a nice social atmosphere, and plently of folk to talk to.

oh, and some really strange games.......

I stayed at the Udechee Huts in Dharamsala. It's nothing glamorous, but it does have western toilets, a great view, and good service. The owners are very nice. I'd stay there again. http://www.udecheehuts.com/

Sorry, Lobo. I was in a group, so I didn't pay the hotel directly. The website has an email address; I'd give that a try!

Good luck!

That is all such good information. It should be added to the Hotel Section so those of us who aren't going for a while can find it again!

Try the Om Guest House , phone : 01892 221322, good situation, quiet, good food. Last year, it was around 300 rupees for a double room with attached bathroom / hot water.
You can reach it from the Mc Leod G. bus stand on a path going down. Not on a noisy road, well no road , just that path.

Kunga's on Bhagsu Road deserves a mention.

Nice people that run it, amazing views down the valley, good value for money. Room rates go from about Rs 250 a night up to Rs. 500+ depending on whether you want an en-suite bathroom / a good view. I paid Rs. 375 a night for a lovely room with it's own balcony, an ensuite bathroom, and a brilliant view down the Kangra Valley.

If you want total peace and quiet, you could stay at Tse-Chokling Gompa, the Tibetan Buddhist Monastery down the hill from 'Om' Hotel. Rs. 125 a night gets you a wonderfully peaceful room with the added bonus of being woken up to the sound of the monks chanting in the morning. One of the most amazing places I've ever stayed in.
