1400 rupees for a double room with a/c in Delhi is a steal! I'd go for the Hotel Ajanta in this case, Preeti. Doubt if there's an off-season discount however, because this is the time of heavy a/c use which is costly for hotels.

It was also *very* quiet (compared with places in the main bazaar of Pahar Ganj.

Sadly customer care at the Ajanta have been slipping as the rooms have been refurbished. Just up ythe road is the Grand Godwin which was when I was there in January a much better bet. Their luxury rooms were excellent and their standard suited me fine ... nice bathroom too. Just avoid the chicken sausage from the buffet breakfast. Believe me it offers a far better deal than the Ajanta.

The Shree Maya in Aurungabad, well its an experience, the terrace for breakfast is great, the staff were wonderful and I expect the new sewer finished and so the street should be back to normal. The rooms are much cheaper, the furnishings a little scruffy, the organisation a little chaotic and the bathrooms were perfectly acceptable, clean, hot water etc., but not for the super fastidious. I would stay there again as I enjoyed myself. My friend Josie-Marie after examining several of the LP recommended hotels decided to splash out and go to a place outside your budget as the wanted better a bathroom suitable for the super fastidious, just to pamper herself feeling out-India'd by the time she arrived. The car/taxi arranged by the Shree Maya which I shared with two Swiss ladies, to visit the Ajanta caves was really good and the driver was fantastic. He made it clear that the arranged price was all in and he didn't need tipping, a nice touch.

As for Varanasi, I prefer to stay outside the old city, but you can get the best bread in India at the bakery cum schooling project suggested by the LP.

uncle martin, i think we posted at the same time since i didnt see your post before! thank you for your honesty, it's always helpful to hear all sides! i'll definitely look into the grand godwin as well...

i was talking to my mom, and she said that she doesnt want to sacrifice cleanliness and comfort... she's very particular about things being super clean (esp the bathroom!). her skin gets irritated easily... sometimes, if she sees something dirty, without touching it, she gets itchy...so, I was doing some googling on the internet on some of the hotels, and some people have made complaints on bed bugs and mold. Im not sure if i should take this seriously though..or should i?

i've read some good things on sardar bazaar and new bakshi house

looks like i'll have to raise the budget a little...
