Yes, I have been very happy with that site, but have only used it to make bookings in Europe so I've no idea what it's like for India.

I've just had my accommodation booking cancelled by Hostelbookers...
According to them my homestay is not using them anymore, so I've had to contact B&B directly for confirmation...fingers crossed!

The homestay has not replied to my several emails, and I've received my deposit back from Hostelbookers.
Actually Hostelbookers were very good with communicating.
I have found other accommodation for our stay in Cochin, so fingers crossed again....

I have used Hostelbookers intensivly in South America and received always excellent service from them. Twice the hostels claimed that the Hostelbooker price on the website was wrong and that I have to pay more. Hostelbookers intervened on my behalf and it worked out fine...
I strongly recommend them

There are also another sites like hostelbookers named are hostelworld or hostellovers.
I have used hostelbookers for other countries than india. in India there aren't that many hostels. Hotels on the lower price end are adequate and very cheap. You don't need reservations unless its a major festival time in hardiwar for instance. Just go to where you want. get a rickshaw and ask him to take u around to places in your price range, go in and check them out first, then give him an extra tip, You can tell him that BEFORE he starts taking u to the places that he gets a commission.
