Try the Old Ladakh Gueat House inside the laybrinths of alleys in the old part of Leh.
Right in the middle of the Old city. They have a small Yard/Garden around which this old building stands. The Place is run by a nice family. I was there 6 yrs ago. So pls update this info before you would want to try it. |

I can't give you up-to-date information, but at least we don't go quite as far back as six years.... we chose the Old Ladakh Guest House in November last year (we arrived on November 1, and many of the other places close their doors at the end of October, as the tourist season has finished by then), and were very happy indeed. The place (which is one of the few that stay open all year round) was almost empty, so they gave us a bright, huge room with an outlook on three sides and a great view of the amazing fort. The location can't be bettered... it's right next to the cinema and just near the polo fields, so it's easy to find when you're hopelessly lost walking the winding streets of the town (and getting lost is one of the main activities in Leh). It's not exactly swank -- around 9 o'clock the electricity failed, and, after waiting in vain for it to come back on -- while the room got colder by the minute -- we decided that the only thing to do was to go to bed and keep each other warm. Just about every other building in town was dark, also, so this wasn't a fault of the guest house (the cinema kept going, so it must have its own generator).
I don't think our room had hot water, but the toilet was fine, which was a relief, as one of the guide books had mentioned that the Old Ladakh's toilets were fairly primitive. I can't remember which guide book gave it a fairly negative review, but I have to say that there wasn't much that the guide book got right -- at least, judging by our room. It's the oldest guest house in town, so everyone knows where it is, and there is nowhere in town that is outside easy walking distance. I'd recommend it highly. |

I'll have to start proof-reading more carefully.... our stay was in November 2004, NOT last year! Sorry!

I would recommend guest houses on Fort Rd, there are many of them. It's best part of Leh. If you're interested, please specify what kind of guest house you need, I mean the price, facilities, time of visit, etc.
