Hello all. This is my first post on IndiaMike!
I am going to India in August and have tentatively booked rooms at the Goan Heritage Hotel on Calangute beach in Goa and at the Qutab Hotel in New Delhi. Has anybody stayed at these places before and could shed some light on what to expect? Good/bad location? Etc.. Thanks. |

Don't know about the hotel but Calangute is the most developed area of Goa and possibly one fo the dirtiest as well
However as August is out of season it at least wont be crowded

Hi akash,
I haven't stayed at this particular hotel, but I know where it is, I'm not going to put you off staying in the area at all because you've obviously read the brochures and done some research and chosen this hotel for your reasons. It's at the southern end of calangute close to the candolim border, You can, probably abot two thirds along athe 4mile! long beach, If you like walking get down there early 7'ish latest & you'll see purpoises 25mts off the beach, you can walk 1 mile to calangute centre, another mile or so to Baga, or the other direction to fort Aguada, which incidetly in the 70s was the first & only 5* hotel in goa, only Margaret Thatcher & coke dealers stayed there,,,,,,,, The Goan Heritage grounds back right onto the beach area, once on the beach theres a choice of shacks for drinks & snacks, you can hang out there all day, and you shuldn't have any problems with the food in the shacks either, that generally goes for everywhere. It's about 10 mins walk up to the main road touristy shops/ restaurants along the way, on the main road you'll find a mini supemaket, phamacy, internet access etc. My advice would be to take a taxi from the airport it'll cost you about 800 Rps, that way you'll arrive sooner than the people who've taken the pick-up coach, when you check in,If you're not quite happy with the room offered say so, they usually try and off load the worst rooms first, they'll offer you something better. Like all hotels, you take your chance, If you're a first timer and I think you are,,,, Then this area should give you everything thats attracted you in the first place,,,,,,,,,,,, Enjoy |

Hey 70's hippy...thx for the info
I've been to Goa about 4 yrs ago and stayed at a timeshare in Vagator area, it was really nice. This time around I am only staying in Goa for 2 nights and taking my brother in law who has never been to India before. We decided that the Calangute beach was where the action was at, and it would be wise to stay there. We are taking the overnight train from Mumbai and the Goan Heritage has offered to pick us up from Thivim or Karmali train station. Also, I am 21 yrs old and would be interested in doing some partying while there...any suggestions, I know its the off season and partying may be limited... |

akash, If you're only staying a couple of nights off season it maybe hard to come upon a "party" best advice unless someone knows better would be to get to "Tito's" night spot between calangute & baga (all drivers know it) and get some Hearsay from there,,,,,,,,,,,,

Not sure there are any parties that time of year ...They're mostly in the mountains in the summer especially Manali and to my mind are the better parties by far
There are some parties in Bagsu (Dharamsala) up at the Shiva Cafe usually or down at the river The whole party scene leaves Goa by April and migrates to the mountains returning at end of November Good luck though Bryan So not sure my advice is relevant but try the Shore Bar Anjuna and the Primrose Vagator I think the only beach parties you'll find that time of year will be in Ko Phan Ghan in thailand ...Not the best and very different from indian parties ...more like Ibiza in Asia than the proper Psy-Goa Trance parties you find in india and certainly not as manic come sunrise |

Akash - as you are going in August there won't be any shacks open on the beach except Brittos at Baga.
