There is a password system, for Visa it's called "Verified by Visa" The Online booking at Indian Railways makes use of this password!! Here's the link

https://usa.visa.com/personal/securi...v_sym_verified

I see there is also one for Mastercard "Mastercard Securecode"

One other safeguard that is used in north america when dealing by e-mail is
to give first four and last four digits of your card number.......leave out the midle four digits. Merchants accept this and so does visa / MC etc.
XXXX____XXXX.

If the site is a "secure" approved web-site, VISA in fact encourages shopping on the net. In other words, the credit card co will re-imburse you if you are cheated on such approved "secure" sites - there is a symbol on approved sites.

And when a hotel doesn't ask your creditcardnumbers when you book, you yourself also trust their word and service, right?

ABC Credit Card Payments

Hi,

I am trying to book a hotel ( Marine Plaza Mumbai )and they are asking me to pay through ABC payments, which seems to be the Indian equivalent to pay pal.

Has anyone ever used ABC Payments safely and securely to book a hotel ?

If I book over the phone, then I dont have a receipt !!

Your advise would be appreciated.

Thanks Erica

I recently booked a flight ticket on phone with travelguru.com. I did this bcos when i booked the ticket with the website, i website was damn slow that it accepted my travel details but was unable to accept the credit card payment. Then i got a call from their customer services representative at 10pm night. The representative was able to see my travel bookings ( i have created a profile) and asked my credit card # . I gave on phone and they booked the ticket and mailed copy of the E-ticket to my email-id.

"If I book over the phone, then I dont have a receipt !!"

Ask them to fax / mail the receipt. And they will do it. If they don't have a policy of mailing/faxing the receipt, try another hotel

it's not safe

Sending credit card numbers by email is not safe. The danger is not (usually) the recipient, but people who tap into the systems that bounce the email along to its destination.

A friend of mine sent a credit card number in an email, and someone not connected with the transaction (as far as anyone knew) got ahold of the number. They charged quite a bit before the credit card company got suspicious and called to verify. Because of US laws limiting liability in such cases, he wasn't out much money. But there was a bit of stress there for a day or two.

Sending cc numbers through secure websites is a different matter.

yes kohinoor

Yes Kohinoor you cant trust. I run a place and never asked for credit card details and advance. Most of the customers honored their booking . But there are instances in which families who booked three rooms for three days never turned up . This type of clients will make the other travelers experience harder. Travel is for pleasure and and to experience the new culture and to learn also. The providers like us have the responsibility to facilitate this and to make your effort fruitful .Also we are running this places for bread winning. That aspect has not to be forgotten by our esteemed clients.
