Full Hotels Everywhere?

Hi I am travelling with my husband into dehli 22nd dec and out fo mumbai 8th jan - loads of hotels seem to be full on the standard tourist route of jaipur, joghpur, udaipur - is this real or is it that they do not open bookings until later? (i read that somewhere) I expected it to be busy but considering the prices over this period not full!!

Dec - Jan is the peak tourist season here. You can expect a lot of mid- range options be booked. But the low end and High end options would still be avialable.

Hi Thead,
I don't have an answer. I've only just enquired about renting a car with driver. I was told that finding hotels wouldn't be difficult in this period in Rajasthan (the driver could help) and it wouldn't be high season!

True, though finding a room at one particular hotel is a different matter.

Yes. Do bear in mind you are almost certainly only checking those hotels which have websites and which are easy for foreigners to book in advance. There will be many others.

Of course it's busy, why else do you think they have that pricing policy? Indian businessmen are very canny, they'd hardly price themselves out of the market would they?

Thead

I recently read an article about homestays becoming a popular option instead of hotels in India. http://travel.nytimes.com/2009/10/18...8journeys.html The article stated there was a shortage of hotel rooms. That there were only 130,000 in India. I almost fell off my chair until I realized they were referring to the big, expensive name brand chains.

India has maybe hundreds of thousands of hotel rooms, just not the 5 star variety.

If you try to book in advance online, there are a small number who you can do this with. We only do that for when we arrive so we have somewhere to stay while we are jet-lagged. After that, we use a guidebook and start calling a couple of days in advance of our arrival at the next place. We always get a place to stay, even during the high season.

You will be there during the high season! Can't imagine anyone saying otherwise!

I dont know if others are implying the same......Dec 22 to Jan 2nd or so is "Peak Season". Max demand and max rates and surcharges.

I agree with the approach that camelgirl has proposed.

Try booking at a good Bed & Breakfast as these are the best options to stay in delhi after 5 star hotels which cost a bomb !!

Jodhpur & Udaipur will be full during Dec & January.

I'll be traveling about the same time. With the trip quickly approaching I've reserved hotels in Agra (there's one I really wanted) and Indore (wedding). But should I go ahead and do it for Udaipur, Abu Rd, Jodhpur and Jaipur? I was just planning on winging it once I get there.
