My only experience with that is in Munnar (Kerala) where the tourist office had all sorts of options for either cottages (expensive) or home-stays (not bad). I stayed outside of town in the hills, about ten minutes from the Tata tea plant. Very memorable.

I really don't know what to say!!! I have been an IMer since the past 3 years and travelling is a major part of my life. I've had the opportunity of staying at the remotest of places with the poorest of families and had such memorable memories of those times. I can understand the feeling of so many people to get an opportunity of experiencing the local life when they travel.

Sometime back, there were a couple of IMers travelling to Gujarat and me being what I am, offered them free homestays - just in the hope that I would be able to give back to society what people have given me when I travel. But, I think they thought there was some catch in it! so, they stayed at one of the more expensive hotels in town. I have a normal family - with a dog put in and we would have loved to have travellers over. And what's more, it was the time of the Navratri festival, which is the biggest festival in Gujarat - celebrated for 9 days with a lot of fanfare and dancing. We had planned to take the visitors to the Mela (fair), attend one of the family pujas and then, to the grounds for a taste of Garba (a form of Indian dance). But I guess, it wasn't in their fate!

Anyway, after that, I stopped giving out invitations.

May be some travelers would like to play it "safe". But there might be many travelers who might be genuinely interested..
