Hiya people
A few friends and I are planning to visit Kashmir next month. While we know there are a slew of hotels and guest houses strewn around the place, it would be nice to know some kinda favourite set of places that we could stay at. This is highly desired, because we want to both - get the local flavour and also connect/ chat/ talk with fellow travelers. Any help? Thanks ahead! Cheers ~T |

Hi
I have been to Kashmir several times and love the place. It is safe for tourists and there are loads of places to visit around within 2 hours by road: Pahalgam, Gulmarg, Yousmarg (great for quiet walks)and Sonnamarg (for the glacier). The city has a 'different' atmosphere and you get less hassle than most places in north India and of course is culturally different from the rest of India - and has great mountain views and Mughal gardens. Day trip, city tour (there are buses and taxis can be arranged from your hotel or houseboat at sensible prices - just be aware of the standard price), take shikara boat trips at dusk are great as is the vegetable market by boat at 5pm, and just relax on the houseboat. Stay on a houseboat on Nigeen Lake not Dal Lake as Dal is crowded, polluted and noisy - Nigeen is clean, with great mountain views and lots of birds. Stay on a houseboat off shore by Nigeen Bridge or on the western side of Nigeen Lake (see review and contacts of Fantasia Houseboats on this site for details) for a great relaxing time and friendly help - I have stayed on Fantasia all the times I have visited and they have more than one boat to choose from. They can organise trips too. No hassle there. Highly recommend them. |

Found the hotel oriental in Leh. Great stuff. Thanks a lot.
Not sure if pre-booking for the rest of the places is required/ possible.. Can some more light be shed? |
