Elementary question about room tarrifs

I'm looking at hotel room rates that look like this:

Single occupancy: 4500 rupees
Double occupancy: 5000 rupees

Does that mean that it's 5000 rupees per person double occupancy? Or that it's a total of 5000 rupees for both people? I've been seeing this kind of price quote a lot, and I want to make sure I understand what it means.

Thanks so much.

Umm, you answered that !

Yes, the same room when occupied by one person would cost less in case of examples like the one you've used. Probably the logic is that their service/support towards that room will be less, compared to the scene when it is occupied by 2 persons.

E.g. two people will consume more water than one, or use more overhead water, or use more electricity for room heater/storage water heater, blah blah blah

it's the room rate, unless it says per person, why you might see if the rate includes all food.

So double occupancy at Rs5000 is a total of Rs5000 (plus any applicable tax of course - unless it says including tax)

Just for info, it's interesting that you spelt tariff wrong as it seems most hotels spell it wrong too. I was looking at the Amet Haveli (Udaipur) web site and the tariff link didn't work, page not found and all that. So I tried change the name of the page from tariff to tarrif (or vice versa) and it worked. Seems quite common over there.

I had tariff/tarrif spelled both ways and they both looked wrong. I've got like a zillion browsers open right now, so I picked the spelling that was in the title of one of the browsers!

At any rate, thanks for the info about the rates. I'm relieved that it means the cost for the entire room and not per person.

Now I shall go back to reading hotel websites...and not trusting their spelling!
